Make a name for yourself in engineering

Registration with the Engineering Council as a Chartered Engineer (CEng), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Engineering Technician (EngTech) is a sure-fire way to boost your career and earnings potential.  As an engineer, you will gain improved status, prospects and recognition with these letters after your name.  Not only that, you will also enjoy a definite advantage over the competition when looking for a new role or promotion.

“More and more engineers are turning to us, in the knowledge that we can help them gain an edge in this increasingly competitive job market,” says Andrew Ramsay, Chief Executive of the Engineering Council.  “There has been a marked increase this year in enquiries.  Since May we have sent the details of over 3,500 potential candidates for CEng, EngTech and IEng registration to the 36 professional engineering institutions licensed by us, and we are also aware that a large number of enquiries have gone directly to the institutions.”

Many employers value the importance of these qualifications, and in particular the assurance of knowing that their employees hold an internationally recognised mark of competence.  “Engineering companies tell us that evidence of employing registered engineering professionals is a frequent requirement for the award of contracts both in the UK and internationally,” adds Andrew Ramsay.  “So it is hardly surprising that those holding our professional qualifications generally find it easier to gain promotion or a new job.”

Professional registration with the Engineering Council is achievable by any competent practising engineer, with different levels and pathways available.

To register for one of these prestigious qualifications you will need to join one of the professional engineering institutions, which are listed on the Engineering Council website.  You will be required to demonstrate competence to perform professional work to the necessary standards, as well as show commitment to maintain your competence, work within professional codes and actively participate within the engineering profession.  This is done through a formal application, and for higher grades, an interview. Your chosen institution will provide all the support you require to assist you with the application process.
