Nissan in Sunderland - the Power to Change your World

Nissan first made its commitment to manufacturing in the UK in 1984, with the establishment of Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK Ltd and a brand new plant in Sunderland. Since the first car - a Bluebird - rolled off the line in 1986, we have grown to become Nissan’s centre of production for passenger cars in Europe, and in 2009 we produced our five and a half millionth vehicle.

Sunderland has been named the UK’s biggest car producer for 12 years running now, and the biggest car exporter for 10 consecutive years. In fact, one in every three new cars built in the UK today is a Sunderland-built Nissan.

The plant now represents over £2.6 billion of investment and directly employs around 4,700 staff, with a further 13,000 roles in the supply chain.

We believe that zero emission mobility will be a significant part of road transport in the future. That’s why we’re investing £420 million in Sunderland to produce advanced lithium-ion batteries and the Nissan LEAF, the world’s first mass-marketed pure electric vehicle.

Work is already well under way on our battery facility - Nissan’s first in Europe - and production will start in 2012, with the first LEAF being produced in 2013. So the next few years are certain to see some electrifying changes at our Sunderland plant.
