Smart was co-Founded in 2002 by Professor Chris Lowe of Cambridge University to exploit an exciting new technology that enables the development of a new generation of sensors for use in the Medical Devices and Diagnostics sector. Undoubtedly, since this a platform technology, it has applications in many other markets. The technology comprises novel interactive holograms ("sensor holograms") that can be engineered to change wavelength, image, brightness or position in response to a wide range of biological, chemical and physical stimuli. Smart has 24 granted/filed patents (includes granted US, PCT and European patents) and 6 Trademarks. The Company already has its first two products in development: a non-invasive sensor for continuous glucose monitoring (GlucoView) and a portable sensor device (the PathoTester) for detection of microbial contamination. Smart has a custom-built laboratory and office facility in Cambridge (UK) and a Commercial office in San Ramon (USA). The Company currently has a team of 35 people (including 17 PhD’s) and is aiming to double its' in-house headcount and UK laboratory size by Summer 2006. Smart is also now implementing installation of a sensor hologram manufacturing plant.
