Works Infrastructure

Works Infrastructure is an organisation with a proud history dating back over 130 years. The first 120 years of the company’s life following its inception as the Public Works Department in 1870 saw it build the majority of the Country’s road, rail, hydro-electric and even housing infrastructure. Corporatised in the early 90’s, the resilience of the people within the business saw it develop to become one of the two major players in the New Zealand market. Purchased by the Australian Public listed Downer Group (itself originally a New Zealand Construction company with a proud history) in 1996 and rapidly expanded through the acquisition of over 30 companies over the next few years, the company became known as Works Infrastructure in 2000. Early in 2001 the Downer Group itself acquired Evans Deakin Industries (EDI) in Australia and changed its name to DownerEDI Group Ltd. With the merger DownerEDI became Australia’s second largest engineering, infrastructure and resource Services Company, able to compete strongly in the growing infrastructure sectors of telecommunications, power, road and rail in Australia and New Zealand. The company’s integrated services platform includes design, project management, operations and maintenance. Downer EDI employs over 13,000 highly skilled people throughout Australia, New Zealand, Asia and the Pacific.
