£20M was allocated to the 2019/20 UK fusion programme by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in October 2018; this provides an initial budget to launch STEP from April 2019.

We seek to appoint a Deputy Director of STEP to support the STEP Director in providing the strategic leadership to deliver the project, as well as help to develop the case for further funding beyond 2019/20.

You will likely be a leading engineer, with experience of managing large complex projects, and have excellent communication and influencing skills. Your expertise will align with the R&D needs of fusion, preferably in an industrial environment.

- Ensuring effective governance and establishing appropriate review processes.

- Prioritising resource and informing a strategy to deliver on targets.

- Representing STEP at meetings and events - internal and external.

- Identifying, monitoring and mitigating risks.

In the event that continued funding for STEP is not secured beyond FY 2019/20, we will work with you to identify a suitable role in one of the many other exciting projects at UKAEA.

The UKAEA hosts and manages the JET nuclear fusion energy experiment on behalf of the EU and is also home to the UK`s MAST-U fusion energy experiment. UKAEA also works with industry and other third parties to develop new technologies currently in Remote Handling and Materials research. Following recent UK funding two new centres of excellence in tritium fuel handling and component testing and validation are being built. The culture at UKAEA promotes research, innovation and leading edge technological excellence, whilst investing in its people.
