Principal Accountabilities
• Understanding of where, when and how environmental commitments originate (planning, permitting, legislation, Government and company policy);
• Assistance with the development and implementation of NNB GenCo plans, processes and procedures to effectively manage environmental commitments and environmental compliance;
• Provision of written and verbal expert advice on UK legislation, compliance, best practice, regulatory expectations and operational experience to functions connected with environmental management within NNB GenCo;
• Practical on site support to site environment team in resolution of environmental and compliance related issues as agreed.
• Support development, in collaboration with other groups within NNB GenCo, of strategies and management plans (i.e. for waste, surface water, groundwater, flooding, contaminated land,) for the new build sites throughout the phases of design, construction, commissioning, operation and taking into account decommissioning;
• Support for the practical implementation of plans, processes and procedures affecting environmental performance and compliance on sites under NNB GenCo control, including the construction sites,;
• Support for managers and other environmental specialists on the construction sites in developing and maintaining an effective environmental culture, with a strong emphasis on environmental compliance and strong environmental performance;
• Provide expert resource to self-assessment and internal audit of site activities to ensure compliance against applicable legislation, NNB processes and procedures and environmental best practice;
• Provide expert resource to the investigation of environmental incidents on NNB GenCo sites, including the provision of reports and recommended actions to prevent re-occurrence of incidents;
• Provide expert resource to for the delivery of the requirements of the NNB GenCo environmental management system, including the review of legislation, assessment of impacts, development of objectives and targets, training of personnel, establishment of operational controls, management of incidents and review of performance;
• Contact, dialogue with and support to internal stakeholders (Architect Engineer, Principal Contractor, Site Construction Team, Health and Safety and Quality) to ensure a consistent, and where applicable, integrated approach;
• Lead or support other Environment team activities, for example the preparation and delivery of environmental permit applications, the assessment of building and system design documents for compliance against UK environmental legislation and best practice and the assessment of the environmental performance of contractors during the pre-qualification and invitation to tender stages of the procurement process;
• Pro-active contact and dialogue with regulators and other stakeholders on environmental issues;
Skills and Qualifications
• Typically degree qualified or equivalent in an environmental or related discipline
• Experience in operating within a high quality environmental management system (EMS) conforming to recognised standards (BS EN ISO14001:2004), including the development of procedures to meet the requirements of the EMS
• Detailed knowledge of environmental legislation in the UK relevant to a construction site, plus knowledge of the supporting guidance, reference notes, industry best practice
• Experience of the provision of advice on environmental compliance to key stakeholders within a large industrial organisation or significant construction project in the UK
• Experience of the management of construction waste (specifically experience of developing and implanting Site Waste Management Plans and experience of working with the CL:AIRE Development Industry Code of Practice on the Definition of Waste)
• A good understanding of the client/contractor relationship and legal responsibilities under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007
• Experience of working with and developing good relationships with the regulators (e.g. Environment Agency, Natural England, Local Authorities, Marine Management Organisation)
• Excellent communication/interpersonal and influencing skills notably throughout various levels of the organisation and externally
• General professional qualities including accuracy, tenacity, result-oriented and teamwork-oriented attitude, diplomacy
• Good organisational skills
• Ability to work independently and be proactive
• Membership or Associate Membership of a relevant Professional Institute (e.g. IEMA, CIWM)
• Experience in working on major construction and/or civil engineering projects or major industrial operational sites in the UK would be an advantage.
