About the programme 

As a Mechanical Design Apprentice, you'll be immersed in a variety of tasks ranging from assisting with scoping calculations to crafting intricate models and detailed drawings. You'll also play a pivotal role in producing design-based documentation and technical reports, ensuring our projects meet the highest standards.

 

Your day-to-day activities will include:

 

  • Assisting in the production of scoping calculations and supporting analysis.
  • Crafting models and drawings using state-of-the-art software.
  • Engaging in site surveying and producing design-based documentation.
  • Collaborating with teams to ensure hazard elimination, risk reduction, and adherence to quality systems.

 

You’ll also spend time undertaking placements across a range of business areas, gaining a holistic view of our operations. 

 

By the end of your apprenticeship, you'll have gained valuable experience, honed your skills and be ready to take on even greater challenges in the world of mechanical design.

 

With the foundation you've built, you'll be an invaluable asset to our team and the broader industry.

 

Your education/training 

You’ll receive practical and theoretical training, combined with company-specific training given in the workplace.     

 

At Wigan & Leigh College, you'll work towards the Level 5 Nuclear Technician (Mech) Apprenticeship standard. This blend of classroom learning and on-the-job training will make sure you're well-prepared for a career as a Mechanical Designer. 

 

What you’ll need  

 

  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, including English and Science.
  • Mathematics at grade 5 (B) or above.
  • 3 A Levels in related subjects or an equivalent Level 3 qualification, e.g. BTEC.
  • Experience in design technology or CAD is desirable.   
  • A genuine interest in CAD design and a positive attitude.   
  • Many of our early careers roles are subject to Security Clearance and Trade Control restrictions which mean that your place of birth, nationality, citizenship, or residency you hold or have held may impact which roles you are eligible for. For our early careers roles, you must be able to achieve BPSS and many of them require you to be eligible for Security Clearance.
