Who are we looking for?

The Electrical Systems Design Engineer is responsible for supporting project managers and technical leads with defining the electrical system requirements across a varied project portfolio: creating design specifications, generating layout designs, overseeing/creating detailed design drawings, developing commissioning schedules and delivering operational systems and equipment. 

As the design engineer, you will be adaptable, with exceptional organisation skills and with a collaborative approach to work. You will have proven ability to deliver electrical engineering projects as well as a passion and and determination to work at pace whilst managing multiple projects. It is an exciting time to be joining the team during this period of growth where you will join a diverse and commercial department, Remote Applications in Challenging Environments (RACE). RACE is based at Culham, within UKAEA, specialising in remote handling and automated systems for challenging environments, working on a range of projects both within and outside of the fusion industry. 

What will you be responsible for?

As an Electrical Systems Design Engineer you will be delivering operational electrical systems for a variety of applications, and will be responsible for: 

• Defining electrical system requirements and design specifications, along with creating detailed design documents and commissioning schedules
• Carrying out electrical design in CAD
• Producing specifications for electrical systems compliant to Machinery and Low Voltage Directives, in particular for automation equipment
• Preparing detailed electrical schematics and related bill of materials.
• Reviewing and approving quality of electrical design and documentation created by other engineers
• Providing technical support for test and commissioning of systems
• Coaching and supervising less experienced staff
• Managing projects and subcontractors, including specifying tasks and tracking progress against project milestones

Please note, you may be required to support activities outside normal working hours during busy periods of time. 

Essential skills, experience qualification and competence required

• Degree or HND/C in a relevant engineering or technical subject, or equivalent experience
• Extensive experience of electrical design using CAD
• Experience with low voltage and extra low voltage systems
• Design experience with motor and drive systems
• Feedback electrical system design, and sensor field wiring
• PLC wiring architecture design 
• Competence in electrical calculations
• Experience of assessing electrical design work
• Ability to work collaboratively in cross discipline teams
• Experience of working within a regulated Industry
• Knowledge of electrical standards and regulations, and electrical principles applied to automation, machinery and distribution systems
• Demonstrable leadership and line management experience
• Proven ability to deliver electrical engineering projects

Desirable skills, experience and competence

• Experience of design for manufacturing
• Experience of electrical cubicle design
• Experience of cable management design
• Experience of electrical commissioning
• Experience of working in a safety-related environment
• Hold, or working towards, Master's degree
• Membership of relevant professional body
• Chartered Engineer, or equivalent professional qualification
