Who are we looking for?

This is a great opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer to join our Central Engineering Department and be involved in a number of programmes of work.  This role will allow you to be involved or lead in creating innovative design solutions to meet challenging requirements, and perform engineering calculations to support design decisions. If you are innovative in seeking creative ways to change, solve problems and push scientific and technical boundaries and have a relevant engineering degree or equivalent, we would like to hear from you.

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will lead and support project engineering, mechanical design and analysis work on major fusion sub-systems, from concept through to detailed design. You will be experienced in performing engineering calculations, modelling to support design choices, whilst remaining determined, flexible and positive to the challenges we face.

What will you be responsible for?

-Design and project engineering work on major fusion sub-systems, enhancement programs for UKAEA`s facilities as well as for future fusion devices.

-Ensuring that detail designs are appropriately validated.

-Supervising detail design and manufacture.

-Developing and effectively implementing systems for managing design requirements and interfaces for ensuring satisfactory performance/compliance.

-Acting as a Technical Reference for other group members in areas of knowledge.

-Producing technical reports, departmental notes and journal / conference papers where relevant.

 As part of this role you could be asked to work in radiation controlled areas or in beryllium controlled areas (full training and medical assessments will be provided if this is necessary).

Essential skills, experience and competence required

- Experience in design and/or project engineering of components and system

- Experience of taking ownership of tasks and working cooperatively to achieve quality outcomes

- Proven capability in engineering analysis and a good working knowledge of engineering materials and their properties

- Experience in producing technical documentation

- A relevant engineering degree or equivalent

Desirable skills, experience and competence

- Experience of working to design standards and design codes

- Experience with fusion relevant environmental factors such as radiation, vacuum and transient magnetic field

- Ability to perform exploratory design calculations

- Experience of supervising others

-Attained or actively working towards Chartered status with a suitable professional institution
