Job Description

Who are we looking for?

This is a great opportunity for an enthusiastic, qualified and experienced mechanical design engineers to join the diverse and growing team at UKAEA.

The Central Engineering Department offers the opportunity to design products for a wide range of UKAEA programmes and Business Units, no two jobs are the same and the technical challenges are wide and varied.

You will help lead the Mechanical Design of fusion systems and related technology. You will have significant responsibility for the design of fusion systems and related technology, from concept through to detailed design.

To be successful as the Mechanical Design Engineer you will require a sound understanding of CAD tools and their application within the design process.

This is an important role which requires you to have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a diverse team across a range of disciplines

What will you be responsible for?

They are experienced in the development of components, equipment and systems and can use CAD tools and validation techniques to propose engineered solutions that meet design requirements.

• Take a leading role in the technical delivery of an engineering solution, from concept to commissioning.

• Develop designs using CAD tools, permit only the required level of detail required to validate, manufacture, inspect and install an engineering solution.

• Ensure the delivery of designs within the agreed scope, time and budget.

• Adhere to design codes and legislation as relevant to the application.

• Ensure all technical documents, both CAD and non-CAD are of sufficient quality and conform to UKAEA specifications.

Qualifications

Essential skills, experience and competence required

• Proven capability in engineering design and a good working knowledge of manufacturing techniques/engineering materials and their properties.

• Experience using Mechanical CAD tools to develop products from concept through to detailed design.

• A good understanding of configuration control and the importance of managing Engineering Data.

• Ability to identify and use the most appropriate and efficient calculation methods to substantiate design decisions.

• A relevant engineering degree/HNC/apprenticeship or equivalent.

Desirable skills, experience and competence

• Experience with relevant environmental factors such as vacuum, tritium, remote handling and transient magnetic fields.

• Formal CAD training
