Who are we looking for?

The UKAEA have a permanent opportunity for a Mechanical Project Engineers to join us, working from our new and state of the art Fusion Technology Facility (FTF) in South Yorkshire.

As the Mechanical Project Engineer, you will be leading one or both of the following activities:

• Supervising suppliers and contractors on-site and in the supply chain in delivery against the technical specification
• Engineering design and design integration of experiments and qualification activities to be conducted at the FTF.

For this Mechanical Project Engineer role, you will lead the development of CHIMERA and other facilities and support the experimental research programme in the FTF. Along with your technical experience you will need to bring flair and diversity to our dynamic and enthusiastic team.

What will you be responsible for?

• You will lead in upholding the performance requirements, including managing verification activities on a plant level.
• You will have the experience and ability to advise on technical solutions, designs and/or critical plant operational and commissioning issues.
• You will develop and implement policy and guidance on best practice, as well as ensuring adherence to accepted standards and producing peer-reviewed technical papers/reports.
• You will make or facilitate timely critical technical decisions that steer the project to delivery in a timely manner, whilst meeting performance requirements and managing risk.

Essential skills, experience and competence required

• A relevant engineering degree or equivalent.
• Experience in supervising teams of other staff, on-site contractors, and/or suppliers
• Proven ability in a project or mechanical engineering role, leading delivery of a product and verification of compliance with a specification through analysis, testing, or commissioning.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Good communication and technical writing skills.

Desirable skills, experience and competence

• Chartered Engineer status with a suitable professional institution.
• Ability to perform exploratory design calculations using first principles.
• Experience with relevant environmental factors such as vacuum and transient magnetic fields.
• Proven capability in engineering analysis and a good working knowledge of engineering materials and their properties.
• Experience with working to recognised engineering standards (particularly experience with implementation of CE/UKCA marking).
• Experience in on-plant operations, or responsibility for resolving issues on complex/critical plant and associated processes.

Please note that this role is split over two levels and the Level 4 offers a salary of £36,397 - £38,620 (inclusive of MPP) and the Level 5 offers a salary of £49,396 - £52,293 (inclusive of MPP). Your level will be assessed as part of the interview process.
