Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a Safety Case Engineer to contribute to, and produce, safety analyses and preparation of safety documentation for existing and future fusion facilities both at UKAEA and in the wider fusion community.

As the Safety Case Engineer your role would be based within the Safety Case Engineering Team under the ‘Engineering Authority’ strand of the Office of the Chief Engineer, which is a collective of engineering specialists and generalists.

This department provides technical governance for the full lifecycle of all UKAEA’s engineering activities, providing the ‘Engineering Authority’ and ‘Fusion Safety Authority’ that are important to realising effective and safe technical outcomes.

As the Safety Case Engineer within the Office of the Chief Engineer, you will be a role model within UKAEA and will be held to high behavioural standards. To succeed in this role you will have to strive to fulfil all of these competencies.

What will you be responsible for?

• Produce and contribute to the preparation of Safety Case documents for facilities within UKAEA and other planned fusion facilities. This involves carrying out Design Basis Analysis and Probabilistic Risk Assessment.
• Assessment of Safety Case Modifications which includes collecting information from the Responsible Officer for the modification and from the facility manager and reviewing the existing safety case and determining whether the safety limits are being challenged.
• Production of Technical Reports in support of the Safety Case. This would involve research into assessment methods and selecting an appropriate methodology.
• Work with a range of stakeholders, to obtain information relevant to the safety case, and produce technical reports in support of the safety cases.
• Attending and inputting into the design review process.
• Contribute to ensuring modern best practices methodologies and technologies are followed.

Essential skills, experience and competence required

• Experience in Safety Case Production
• Extensive experience in preforming Design Basis Analysis and Probabilistic Risk Assessment
• Training and experience in undertaking HAZOP studies
• Experience of Fault Schedule production
• Degree or equivalent in a science or engineering discipline
