What’s the best way to improve the practical knowledge of engineering students?

Engineering students are set to start or resume their studies but – as we’ve found from reader feedback – the practical and technical skills of those entering the workplace is often lacking.
The problem isn’t restricted to engineering graduates, with school leavers singled out for criticism in this regard.
So what can be done about it?
The IET’s ‘Engineering Work Experience for All’ campaign, which is due to launch on September 20, wants to redress the situation with students at all levels experiencing practical experience in the workplace.
However, will work experience alone give engineering students the requisite skills they need to ‘hit the ground running’ at work, or is the situation more complicated? Let us know by taking part in our poll below and via comments, please click here.
