Applications Engineer

As an Applications Engineer your responsibility is to provide technical support to customers that are using the company products (Motor Control for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles). You must possess a high degree of understanding for how our products are designed and how they work.

Under guidance from your line manager, you will take a lead role in helping to ensure that the Motor Control products are being used by our customers are used in a safe and reliable way.

Working from a small satellite office in Stuttgart, Germany, we need self-starters who are eager to learn and develop their careers.

You will keep records and documentation of product setup, including configuration files and customer installation/wiring details.

Experience and Skills

1 Qualified to Engineering Degree or Masters.
2 Application engineers are problem solvers, often needing to find solutions and workarounds to specific customer requests.
3 Structured work approach and self-starter, with ability to show initiative and work independently on customer site.
4 Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
5 Good commercial awareness is required by application engineers as they often participate in information gathering meetings with customers to determine their needs, business goals and desired outcomes.
6 Some electric machines knowledge required, although this will be strengthened significantly with further training.
7 Electrical/Electronic engineering knowledge required – circuit design useful.
8 Opportunities for some high level software work so ANSI C language knowledge will be an advantage.


An Applications Engineer is responsible for:-

1 Work from the Stuttgart office with regular travel to client sites
2 Take the generic motor controllers and work with customer to safely modify the configuration to suit end application vehicle needs.
3 Hold technical discussions with customers in order to help ensure correct selection of Sevcon products to be used; also including integration of auxiliary products such as Display, DC/DC where possible.
4 Assist customers with product installation and the commissioning of the target vehicle, typically at customer location (throughout Europe and Asia).
5 Characterisation of motors for optimum setup, often using dyno in the UK or at customer location.
6 Assist customers in system design review or analysis, including system checklists, FMEA and FTA.
7 Provide feedback about application engineering problems to Engineering.
8 Any other duties as assigned from time to time by the Global Manager, Applications Engineering
