The Role – Overview and Context:

My client requires a Senior Hydraulic Modeller to join their dynamic team in Peterborough or Haywards Heath. This is an enviable role as you'll be sharing ideas with industry leaders, and shaping the delivery of hydraulic modelling projects, including 1D and 2D models for rivers and surface water. Your skills will include analytical use of GIS software. You will have good technical and project management skills and the confidence to lead technical work for their clients, as well as help team members in developing their skills. We actively encourage strong, direct relationships with our clients, so you will also assist in building networks that will underpin new business.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

* Developing both 1D and 2D hydraulic models (using Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, and other hydraulic modelling software as required)
* Preparation and data analysis using spreadsheets and GIS software (ArcGIS, Maplnfo, QGIS)
* Setting the technical direction and modelling approach for hydraulic studies, based on client needs and/or scopes.
* Project Management, covering project proposals, managing projects or project components, taking responsibility for own resource and potentially resource allocation of others, contracts and subcontractors, invoice preparation, liaising with clients and project directors, obtaining client feedback, compliance with procedures and policies on QHSE (quality, health and safety, and environment)
* Develop knowledge of clients and market
* Working in collaboration with other design disciplines to ensure the integrity of the overall design.
* Ensuring compliance in the components of the project for which you have responsibility, including drawings, reports, specifications and studies
* Supporting and developing junior hydraulic modelling staff
* Report Writing and Presentation
* Field Work as required on a project by project basis

Key challenges:

* Working in collaboration with other design disciplines (both within Water UK and wider company) to ensure the integrity of the overall design
* Providing input to project team, leading by example to achieve sector goals and championing quality and innovation.
* The ability to learn new and innovative techniques to prepare models and hydrology for UK and overseas projects.

Qualifications and Experience:


* Bachelor's degree in an appropriate analytical subject (Civil Engineering , Environmental Science , Water Resources , Engineering Hydrology)
* Proven experience in fluvial Hydraulic Modelling (1D and 2D), specifically Flood Modeller (formerly ISIS­) and TUFLOW
* Proven skills using GIS, including ArcGIS Maplnfo, and freeware open source such as QGIS
* Excellent communication and analytical skills
* Excellent report writing skills
* Ability to manage projects
* Ability to lead and carryout Flood Risk Assessments and an in depth knowledge of UK flood risk policy and planning processes (NPPF, SPP and TAN15)
* Carrying out technical reviews of hydraulic models and Flood Risk Assessments


* Master's degree in related subject, such as Engineering Hydrology, River & Coastal Engineering , Water Resources Technology, etc.
* Chartered with CIWEM or ICE (or progressing structured training scheme in relevant discipline)
* Basic programming language to support development of tools
* Experience of Surface Water Management Plans, Water Cycle Strategies and SuDS
* Experience with Developers
* Hydraulic design and appraisal of flood risk management schemes, including hydraulic structures such as weirs, culverts, fish passes, flood storage areas, natural flood management
* Estimation of hydrological flood flows and hydrographs using Flood Estimation Handbook methodologies, including the FEH Statistical Method and the Revitalised Flood Hydrograph Method (ReFH)
* Additional modelling packages such as Infoworks ICM, Mike 11/21, Hec Ras, Microdrainage.
* Modelling of urban drainage, and surface water flooding, coastal modelling
