Job Description
Principal Safety Engineer

o Implementing safety processes and plans in large complex systems (hardware & software);
o Developing safety processes;
o Developing Safety Management Plans (SMPs);
o Hazard identification and analysis;
o Qualitative and quantitative analyses;
o Functional decomposition;
o Human Factors, operability and maintenance impact on safety;
o Liaising with engineers and suppliers;
o Developing ALARP arguments;
o Developing safety cases.

Experience in the following safety techniques:
o Functional Hazard Assessment (FHA);
o Fault Tree Analysis (FTA);
o Event Tree Analysis (ETA);
o Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (FMEA);
o Accident Sequence Modelling;
o Fault Schedules;
o Hazard & Operability Analysis (HAZOP);
o Zonal Hazard Analysis (ZHA).

Experience in using safety standards and guidance:
o E.g. IEC61508, DO178, DEF-STAN-00-56, ARP-4761;
o Setting integrity requirements (e.g. SIL, DAL);
o Providing/ eliciting compliance evidence to standards and requirements;
o Dealing with Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) equipment;
o Dealing with Software of Unknown Pedigree (SOUP).

Experience of requirements:
o Developing Safety Functional Requirements (SFRs);
o Deriving safety requirements on systems, components and testing from safety analyses;
o Setting Availability, Reliability & Maintainability (ARM) requirements;
o Providing/ eliciting compliance evidence to requirements;
o Accounting for time at risk for requirements.



The Individual

QUALIFICATIONS:
o Ideally degree qualified and Chartered Engineer or having a portfolio under consideration by an appropriate parent institution.
o Suitably Qualified and Experienced Person who is capable of undertaking safety analyses


EXPERIENCE:
o A combination of appropriate engineering experience and safety case development through a minimum of 3-years within submarines, design, and justification
