Job Role/ Purpose

We are looking for high calibre individuals with experience and strong understanding of heat transfer, thermofluid modelling and mechanical design within the aerospace or similar industry to deliver the design solutions for, but not limited to, their new class of high performance propulsion system. The candidate will be responsible for leading design work packages, assessing solutions, and generating independent designs for comparison to be presented to senior engineers and managers. The ideal candidate would have a track record of delivery of high performance designs, be effective working in a multidisciplinary team, and would be confident presenting and justifying their solutions and recommendations to peers, seniors, and external partners.

Advanced manufacturing processes allow construction of heat exchanger of exceptional performance per unit mass and volume. We also work in materials tolerant to challenging working fluids such as supercritical CO2 and hydrogen. The technical team has solved some exceptionally difficult thermal challenges in developing the engine – solutions that have utility in a range of other applications.

This role will sit in our heat exchanger design department and be allocated to projects across the business, supporting designs and providing technical solutions to all engines and their experimental programmes. Additionally, the department supports our Future projects team, working alongside our Business Development function engineers moving rapidly through a concept, analysis, design and test cycle.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Heat Exchanger Department Team Leader your role will include:

* Providing thermal design and analysis solutions in support of programmes and technologies
* Technically lead heat exchanger projects, working closely with in-house engineering teams (mechanical design, performance & aerodynamics, materials & structures, advanced manufacturing and production) to deliver solutions from concept design, through detailed analysis, manufacturing, assembly and test
* Identify new and novel solutions to the technical problems
* Prepare, present and report technical work to peers, seniors, external suppliers and customers

Qualifications

* Applicants will have a PhD or an MEng / MSc in an aerospace or similar engineering discipline and an appropriate level of industrial experience
* A relevant BEng/BSc plus equivalent industrial experience will be considered

Knowledge and Experience

* In depth knowledge of thermodynamics and fluid dynamics
* Developed understanding of thermal analysis techniques, methods and principles
* Ability to lead technology teams to achieve creative solutions
* Experience in the mechanical design of heat exchangers or similar components

Desirable (some subset of):

* Knowledge and experience of a broad variety of heat exchangers
* Developed knowledge and experience of thermal analysis software tools and the management of simulation data
* Experienced in structural analysis using finite element codes
* Exposure to a manufacturing, prototyping or development environment would be preferred
* Experience with using CAD software systems (e.g. Solidworks)
* Experience across one or more New Product Introduction cycles would be beneficial
* Experience working with sub-contractors, partners and customers
