Summary of Role:
Responsible for providing the software project technical lead, either directly with minimal supervision, or as the leader of a team of engineers. Capable of elicitation and interpretation of functional requirements to produce appropriate designs and software implementations for DCS and/or PLC/SCADA based control systems, their subsequent testing and commissioning. The role is within the Power Generation sector, and experience in thermal power generation systems and processes is preferred, although there may be the opportunity to work within other market areas, including water, gas storage, transmission and nuclear generation, reprocessing, waste management and de-commissioning. The candidate should have proven experience of working within a robust Quality Management System suitable for regulated industries to high standards, tight deadlines and cost constraints. This role is based at our office in Staffordshire, but there may be some periods of working away at client sites in the UK or Ireland.

Role Description:
- Leading the technical design for the development of DCS and/or PLC/SCADA systems from customer requirements within an established quality management system.
- Involvement throughout whole software/systems lifecycle, from requirements elicitation/interpretation, design implementation, testing, installation through to configuration/commissioning.
- Production and control of documentation across the whole lifecycle.
- Configuration and change management control.
- System verification and validation.
- Provide design input to development of application code libraries and frameworks.
- Provide domain knowledge into the projects and wider team.
- Provide technical support/estimation to the Business Development Team.
- Assist with continual improvement initiatives within the department.
- Mentoring and coaching of junior staff.

Essential Requirements:
- Qualified to degree/HND level in Engineering / Computer related discipline.
- Working towards Chartered status
- Minimum 10 years’ relevant experience.
- Functional decomposition and refactoring.
- Able to evaluate and report accurately on the progress of a large team of people.
- Demonstrable supervisory/mentoring experience.
- Good client facing skills, must be able to work as part of combined client/contractor team.
- Understands how the project stakeholders’ perception is effected by the actions of their team.
- Solid understanding of system/software V/waterfall based lifecycles.
- Application of quality systems via quality plans or similar.
- Willingness to travel and work away when required.
- Driving licence.
- IEC61131 series of standards with emphasis on programming languages and guidance on their use. - Experience of a variety of DCS and/or PLC/SCADA platforms and tools.
- Understanding of relational databases and their day to day use.
- Understanding of thermal power generation.

Desirable Requirements:
- Chartered status.
- Experience of Schneider/Rockwell products.
- Thermal generation process/plant experience.
- Modulating control
- Familiar with a variety of development lifecycles and software development techniques.
- Experience/understanding of languages such as VBA.
- Database design and management.
- Familiarity with DCS/PLC hardware platforms.
- Familiarity with legacy systems and their conversion.
- Water, wastewater or Gas related experience (Storage, transmission, Power generation).
- Network architecture and IT infrastructure design and configuration for control systems.
- Familiar with risk management.
- Safety lifecycles and IEC 61508 Functional Safety experience.
- IOSH managing safely.

Candidates should possess the following personal qualities:
- Capable of communicating at both team and management levels, including confidently presenting/leading technical discussions.
- Able to effectively lead teams, schedule and track activities.
- Confident and able to work under own initiative.
- Ability to work well under pressure and to deadlines.
- Used to working within a Quality Management System with the associated level of detail/accuracy.
- Have excellent organisational and communication skills.
- Be flexible in working methods and hours.
