Technical Assistant – Marine Equipment
Perth, Scotland (office/field based, with travel throughout Scotland and the North of England)
£19,219 - £22,611 Plus Excellent Benefits including Company Van & Travel Expenses

If you’re an engineer who hates the idea of a desk job and wants to get out on the road (and water), this is an amazing opportunity to play a key role in supporting a lifesaving service.

Our client is the charity that saves lives at sea. For over 190 years, they have been finding ways to innovate and evolve to reduce drowning in their waters. Now, they’re looking for a Technical Assistant to join their Scottish Division.

You will have the chance to significantly increase your skill-set and pay an integral role in the trials and assessment of all current and new equipment. What’s more, you’ll have the opportunity to undertake training to become a Systems Technician, making this the ideal role to build a rewarding career.

Whatever the weather, our client’s equipment and crew need to operate to the highest technical standards. As a Technical Assistant, you’ll ensure that the charity’s equipment is up to the challenge.

Working closely with experienced Station Mechanics and System Technicians, you will carry out planned maintenance, diagnose faults and repair defects on the division’s electrical, mechanical and electronic equipment.

As part of your role, you’ll be required to travel to sites throughout Scotland and the North of England. This may involve working away for up to five days at a time.

Additionally, your duties will involve:

- Performing vital maintenance on lifeboats, plant and lifeguard equipment
- Helping to maintain stock
- Moving plant throughout Scotland and the North of England
- Calibrating equipment
- Attending sea trials

Interested? To join this passionate and dedicated team, you will need:

- Engineering experience
- Marine experience
- Knowledge of diesel engines and/or electrical systems
- At a minimum, an NVQ Level 2 qualification
- A towing licence

As this is a sea-going appointment, the successful candidate will also need to satisfy the institution's medical and eyesight standards.

Adaptable and eager to learn, as a Technical Assistant, you’ll be able to respond quickly to changing priorities and tight deadlines. Strong communication skills and a hands-on approach to problem-solving are also key.

Please note, the closing date for applications is 11th July 2017.

Our client’s staff and volunteers have been saving lives at sea without prejudice for nearly 200 years. They respect and value diversity of background, skills and perspectives within their teams, and consider it essential to help deliver a world-class lifesaving service. They are an inclusive organisation and welcome applications from everyone. In addition to having the skills needed for the role, they also look for applicants who share their commitment to living their values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable), and helping work towards their goal of halving drowning in the UK and Ireland by 2024. This involves a growing commitment to preventative action, using expertise to work in partnership with communities locally, nationally and internationally to prevent drowning.
