Our Client is a world leading international and innovative manufacturer of technical papers and provider of packaging solutions, employing approx. 4,400 employees worldwide.

Their UK manufacturing site is an internationally recognised speciality paper manufacturer, being a Global/European leader in supplying paper products to the healthcare and food packaging markets.

They have a vacancy in their Technical Team for a site Chemical Process Engineer.

The Job Role:

The role will primarily provide technical and troubleshooting support to the manufacturing process including; chemical safety, improvements in chemical/process efficiencies and approval of new chemicals/suppliers. They will also implement the requirements of the mill’s Environmental (EPR) Permit (environmental experience or qualification not an essential requirement).

Main Accountabilities:

* Safe and efficient use of process chemicals on site
* Trial work with chemicals in both the lab and on the paper machines.
* Ensure MSDS and COSHH assessments are maintained for all chemicals on site.
* Technical support to the production process in the areas of Wet End Chemistry & Coating Chemicals.
* Technical support in the areas of process monitoring & process development.
* Assist in areas of Product Safety
* Technical advice on the day to day operation of the effluent treatment plant to ensure efficient performance and permit conditions are met.
* Implement the requirements of the mill Environmental (EPR) Permit and ensure ongoing compliance.

Specific Responsibilities:

Process Control & Monitoring:

* Assist in the introduction of improved process methodologies from a technical viewpoint.
* Process trouble shooting
* Work on projects to improve process efficiency

Production Chemicals:

* Undertake process chemical trials.
* Specific problem solving of chemical related problems.
* Monitor the Boiler water testing
* Work with nominated chemical supplier representatives.
* Carry out laboratory assessment of trial chemicals.

Day Technical Department:

* Deputise when needed in the co-ordination of the release of medical & other paper from the quarantine system and provision of paper test results as required by the Market Support Office.

COSHH

* Responsibility for maintenance of COSHH system & assessments.
* Maintain and update as appropriate MSDS file of production and laboratory chemicals.
* Maintain procedures for the safe handling and use of chemicals.
* Keep system of checks and testing up to date for Legionnaires bacteria controls.
* Maintain a system for issuing and maintaining respiratory protective equipment (RPE).

Product Safety:

* Provide assistance when required in areas of Product Safety, including external paper testing to appropriate food and medical standards and providing responses to customer enquiries relating to chemicals and product testing.

Effluent Treatment Plant:

* Provide Technical assistance to the Effluent Treatment Plant including Interpretation of test data from the plant and providing Technical advice on the efficient operation of the plant and associated activities.
* Co-ordination of the effluent cake disposal, including ensuring regulatory compliance, liaising with agricultural consultants, the spreading contractor & farmers.

The Candidate:

* Ideally a minimum HNC in Chemistry or similar science discipline and/or a minimum of 3 years relevant work experience
* Strong initiative, an ability to analyse technical problems, and to use a range of influencing skills to make required improvements and efficiencies
* Environmental experience or qualification is not an essential requirement.
