Job Title: Cryogenic Design Engineer

Location: Milton Park, Abingdon (OX14)

Salary: Competitive

Job Type: Full Time, Permanent

Job Role:

Our client aims to accelerate the adoption of fusion power generation by combining two emerging technologies - spherical tokamaks and high-temperature superconductors (HTS). The company is developing a series of technology demonstration prototypes, culminating in a pilot plant which will exceed fusion energy breakeven.

The successful candidate will be part of the HTS Engineering team, which is responsible for developing HTS technology for the plasma confinement magnet. The successful candidate will be a creative engineer with the ability to enable our client to become a world leader in large-scale HTS magnet design for fusion applications.

HTS technology will be developed in-house and demonstrated by manufacturing a series of test prototypes of increasing scale. The successful candidate will play a key role in taking prototypes from concept to hardware, and will be highly motivated by the opportunity to contribute to making fusion power a viable candidate as a global energy source on a sub-decade timescale.

Skills & Experience:

Duties will include:

* Design/specification, installation and commissioning of cryogenic systems for cooling prototype HTS magnets.
* Liaising with other engineers responsible for HTS magnet design, tokamak physics, power supplies and mechanical integration.
* Liaising with external contractors for supply of cryogenic hardware, ultimately leading to supply of the fusion magnet cryo-plant.
* Internally the post holder will report to the HTS Technology Development manager and liaise with the Electrical Engineering Group Manager, Research Director and other mechanical, electrical and design engineers working within the Company.
* Externally the post holder will liaise with manufacturers, component suppliers and technical consultants in industry and academia.
* The post will involve occasional travel within the UK and overseas.

Technical skills and experience:

* Degree in Chemical or Process/Control Engineering, or Physics.
* PhD in Engineering or Physics with a focus on cryogenics, or equivalent industrial experience.
* Relevant experience of cryogenic systems design and/or process control at an appropriate level in an industrial manufacturing or technology prototyping environment.
* Experience in the design and manufacture of large scale cryogenic devices, ideally superconducting magnets, and/or experience of cryogenic process control.
* Experience of project management, preferably in large industrial plant or R&D environment.
* Knowledge of current manufacturing methods and materials.
* Demonstrated track record of practical and innovative engineering in a technology development environment.
* Experience with risk assessment and design for manufacture.
* Fully conversant with engineering and process control drawings and documentation methods.
* Demonstrate a clear understanding of the health & safety requirements relevant to the role.

* Experience with design, specification or operation of cryogenic systems for superconducting magnets.
* Knowledge of cryogenic design methods and associated design tools.
* Knowledge of electrical and fluid control engineering and/or instrumentation.
* 3D visualization and CAD skills.
* Understanding and awareness of intellectual property.
* Experience using test and diagnostic equipment.
* Experience of failure modes and effects / reliability analysis.

Personal attributes:

* Highly motivated to deliver against challenging objectives in a compressed timescale.
* Ability to contribute effectively in a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and scientists.
* Open-mined and willing to learn new techniques and technologies.
* Effective written and oral communication skills.
* Organised approach to complex problems.
* Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
* Proactive attitude.
* Self-starting and self-reliant.
* Ability to devise and operate effective project schedules.
* Creativity and innovation.
