Head of Operational Engineering

Wessex Water has a turnover of £525m and Operating costs £290m. It provides water to 620,000 properties and sewerage services to 1.2m customers in the south of England, including Dorset, Wiltshire, Somerset, and South Gloucestershire. It owns and operates 407 Sewage Treatment Works, 105 Water Treatment Works, and 1,580 Sewage Pumping Stations, 146 Booster Stations, 266 Service Reservoirs, 36 Office Buildings. There are some 3000 dispersed sites taking some form of electrical power supply.
This is a varied and busy role, with a main responsibility to achieve Wessex Water’s aims and all regulated and internal KPI’s across a variety of functions including; directly managed units, technical leadership, staff development, asset management, business systems/change and the capital programme. The role has specific duties associated with the development, implementation and management of the Electrical Safety Policy across much of the wider Wessex Water Business. Therefore, a detailed knowledge of electrical power systems and components is required.
The role holder assumes primary responsibility for the effective management of electrical safety across a range of Wessex Water companies.
You will be responsible for technical governance of several hundred Wessex Water Operational staff in respect of electro-mechanical plant, equipment and systems, as well as the direct management of approximately 60 staff, through 6 direct reports with associated operational expenditure of approximately £5.6m per annum. You will be expected to ensure compliance at all times with appropriate international, national and internal standards, policy, and procedures across the Wessex Water business. You will sit on various internal and national committees to design, develop and approve technical policy and standards.
In order to succeed in this role it is expected that you will be registered with the Engineering Council as a Chartered Electrical Engineer (CEng), with between 5-10 years demonstrable experience as a HV SAP, managing electrical safety in a dispersed operating environment. The ability to bring new ideas to identify areas/processes to solve business problems with a sound financial and commercial acumen is essential. You will need familiarity with appropriate legislation/standards, and good negotiation, delegation and influencing skills with the ability to make difficult decisions in the interest of the business.
