Who we are


We are developing a new generation of instruments for cutting edge scientific, process and industrial applications. Our technology applies a world first approach to tuneable laser spectroscopy for ultra-high precision gas analysis. These instruments have broad applicability in global environmental monitoring networks, upstream and downstream oil and gas operations, next generation semiconductor fabrication and a wide variety of process industries. 

We are in early development stage, as such this is a unique opportunity to be part of a rapidly growing company and be integral to the shaping of a new technology that has potential to push the boundaries of science, improve profitability and safety in industrial settings and reduce emissions throughout a variety of process industries. 

Photonics Engineer Main Responsibilities:

The Photonics Engineer will be responsible for design, development, testing of core technical developments, scientific instrument R&D, managing pan European research and innovation projects and a role in technical business development for the company.

Duties:

In partnership with the company's management team, identify opportunities and risks for delivering our spectrometer technology and hands on support of the product design, development and production. This successful candidate will also be expected to gain an understanding of the technology landscape, identify opportunities for innovation, and assessment of marketplace obstacles and technical hurdles to the business success.

+ Identify technology trends and evolving technology applications that may support or impede the success of the business
+ Evaluate and identify appropriate technology platforms for producing and evolving our spectrometer
+ Lead planning of core R&D projects and deliver to cost & timescale
+ Support in the design, development and testing of core product development activities 
+ Management of large collaborative European innovation projects

Person Specification for the Post

Technical Environment:
+ Tuneable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS), Mid-Infrared, Quantum Cascade Lasers/ Optics/ Photonics 

Personal characteristics: 
+ Gravitas, a leader, confident, consistent, resilient, diversity, eager, start-up mentality, bright, down to earth, analytical; attention to detail

External Relationships: 
+ Tooling & Materials suppliers, outsourced front-end manufacturing partners, technology partners, software & electronic engineering contractors.

Qualifications:

+ Ph.D./D.Phil. in experimental physics in relation to Laser Spectroscopy. Knowledge of laser spectroscopy sensing practical applications is desirable. 
Essential: 
+ Experience in optical instrument development.
+ Knowledge of research techniques particularly with regard to design, specify and build of optical systems and performing measurements. 
+ Knowledge and experience in laser physics.
+ Knowledge/ experience in optics / optical engineering. 
+ Proven experience in performing experimental / applied research using lasers and optical systems. 
+ Experience in the design and use of laser spectroscopy based instruments.

Desirable: 

+ Experience in developing and applying data analysis algorithms and developing physical models using mathematical software packages or programming languages (e.g. IDL/ MATLAB, PV.WAVE, MS Windows / Unix, Fortran or C). 
+ Previous technical experience in a commercial environment or collaborative research with commercial entity. 
+ Strong research skills in laser physics.
+ Enthusiastic on the prospect of a commercial project.
+ Effective written and verbal communication skills.
+ Highly proficient in the relevant technical knowledge. 
+ Ability to present complex information effectively to a range of audiences. 
+ Ability to apply a logical approach to problem solving.

The ideal candidate will have excellent qualifications in related technical disciplines and be able to demonstrate expertise in Laser Spectroscopy/ Optics / Optoelectronics/ Electronic Engineering/ Analytical instruments product and process technology development. This should be coupled to experience at, or near, senior management level, ideally with start-up/SME business experience as some stage in your career.
