Role: Health, Safety, Security, Wellbeing (HSSW) Technical Manager
Location: London (+Travel)
Type: Contract
Duration: 1 year

I am looking to place a Health, Safety, Security and Wellbeing specialist in an international engineering consultancy’s London office, on a contract basis. Your main focus of work will be the Lower Thames Crossing project, the estimated £5 billion scheme to develop the new crossing across the Thames river, adding a new connection between Kent and Essex.

The role requires both a hands-on approach as well as technical development of HSSW materials. You will take the lead on the strategy/policy development as well as review any submissions from the multiple project teams, ensuring that the policies you develop are being followed. You will also work with Project 2041 to develop sustainable business strategies, alongside developing Works Information for Health, Safety, Security, Incident Management and CDM. You will be working with a wide variety of technical specialists to develop, implement and audit policies and procedures.

Ideally, you will have previous experience of working in a construction or engineering environment on a range of HSE or HSSW projects, as well as relevant education. You will also be a member of a relevant professional body, such as the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and you may be on the Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register (OSHCR). Due to the nature of operating across various project teams, some travel should be expected. This is a large-scale project with no small number of challenges ahead, so you will need to be flexible to changing environments and have the ability to adapt to new situations.

For this development phase of technical documentation, the contract is set to last a year. However, with the Lower Thames Crossing not to be open for use until 2025 at the earliest, there is scope for development of ongoing work on the LTC, maintaining oversight for the HSSW policies that you have developed.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on one of the largest Infrastructure projects currently being undertaken in the South-East. Estimates indicate that the 7-10 year project will generate over 5,000 new jobs in the area, inject £7 billion into the economy and open a strategic road network, developing huge growth opportunities for Kent and Essex and greatly supporting UK businesses.

Role Requirements:
  • Relevant HSQE / HSSW Education
  • Graduate / Chartered Member of Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH)
  • Experience of large-scale construction/infrastructure projects
  • Experience of policy development, implementation and auditing
