Ref: 7957

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is a charity that provides a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service and a seasonal lifeguard service. Our Lifeboat crews and Lifeguards need a dedicated, professional and talented team behind them so whatever the weather our Lifeboats and Lifeguard assets can operate to the highest technical standards.

As a Systems Technician (Mechanical) within the North Division, you will cover maintenance and repair of RNLI assets, you will be expected to work closely with Station Mechanics, Volunteers and Lifeguards to carry out planned maintenance, fault diagnosis & repair on various pieces of equipment which could be anything from a Lifeguard Quad Bike to a brand-new state of the art Shannon Class Lifeboat and SLARS launching rig.

Part of your duties as a Systems Technician (Mechanical) will include trials of existing, repaired or new equipment so you will need to possess and demonstrate an excellent mechanical and electrical knowledge. You should have a desire to stay current, in the use of existing technology and also a willingness to learn and be involved in the roll out of new equipment and technology which is constantly changing within the RNLI.

The role as a Systems Technician (Mechanical) requires a minimum Level 3 qualification (NVQ, City and Guilds or equivalent) in a mechanical engineering discipline, ideally with knowledge of high speed diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electronic control systems and the use of electronic diagnostic equipment. You must have completed a time-served apprenticeship in engineering.

This role is suitable for someone that is self-motivated and willing to go that extra mile. You will work either as a part of a team or under your own initiative to the highest of standards with a first fix approach to return RNLI SAR assets back on service as soon as possible. The candidate will need to take on new ideas and undertake training.

The role requires you to be part of a duty rota and be expected, when required, to work unsociable hours. There is considerable travel involved and you will be expected to work away from home on a regular basis. This position is not suitable for someone that would like a 9-5 job, is not prepared or unable to work on their own initiative and is not prepared to work away from home.

There are three openings for this role, each covering different locations:

ST West Coast - Predominately in the West Kirby to Silloth area, the ideal candidate would be best placed on the Wirral peninsula.

ST East Coast - Predominately in the Redcar to Skegness area, the ideal candidate needs to reside within a 25mile radius of Scarborough.

ST Relief Fleet - Predominately in the North Division working on relief fleet assets. Lifeboat assets are mainly stored in Hartlepool.
