Systems Technician (Mechanical)
Swords, Co. Dublin (with travel throughout Ireland and the UK)
€32,755 - €38,535 DOE

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is a charity that provides a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service and a seasonal lifeguard service.

Whatever the weather, equipment and crew need to operate to the very highest possible technical standards. It will be up to you to ensure this. This is an ideal opportunity to use your skills working on state of the art lifeboats and the associated equipment throughout Ireland and occasionally the UK.

You will become part of a close team working with Station Mechanics, Contractors and other Technical staff to carry out planned maintenance, fault diagnosis and defect repair on all of the mechanical/electrical equipment within the region. It’s a chance to really make a lifesaving impact on the vital maintenance of lifeboats and their equipment.

To be successful, you will need to be a proactive individual who can respond quickly to changing priorities and tight deadlines.

We are looking for a time-served Technician with mechanical/electrical experience preferably within a marine environment. Your in-depth knowledge of mechanical/electrical systems will be key.

Part of your duties as a Systems Technician will include trials of existing, repaired or new equipment so you will need to possess and demonstrate an excellent mechanical and electrical/electronic knowledge. You should have a desire to stay current in the use of existing technology and a willingness to learn and be involved in the roll out of new equipment which is constantly changing within the RNLI’s Search and Rescue equipment.

This role is suitable for someone that is self-motivated and willing to go that extra mile, working either as a part of a team or under their own initiative to the highest of standards with a first fix approach to return RNLI SAR assets back on service as soon as possible. The candidate will need to take on new ideas and undertake training.

To be considered as a Systems Technician, you will need:

- A time served Engineering apprenticeship or experience in mechanical, electrical and/or electronic engineering
- At least an NVQ level 3 (or equivalent) in a mechanical, electrical or electronic discipline
- A full, valid driving licence

Experience in at least one of the following areas will also be essential:

- Diesel and petrol engines and/or electrical systems
- Marine or plant
- Construction and/or modification of electronic equipment
- Repair and maintenance of electronic equipment

A towing licence would also be advantageous, but this is by no means essential as training can be provided.

As this is a sea-going appointment, you will need to satisfy the institution's medical and eyesight standards.

The role requires you to be part of a duty rota and be expected, when required, to work unsociable hours. As this is a field-based role, you will be required to travel throughout Ireland and occasionally the UK.

This role comes with an RNLI Van and other excellent benefits including 26 days' holiday, excellent pension scheme with life cover, health cash plan and more.

Our staff and volunteers have been saving lives at sea without prejudice for nearly 200 years. We respect and value diversity of background, skills and perspectives within our teams, and consider it essential to help us deliver a world-class lifesaving service. We are an inclusive organisation and welcome applications from everyone. In addition to having the skills needed for the role, we also look for applicants who share our commitment to living our RNLI values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable), and helping us work towards our goals of halving drowning in the UK and Ireland by 2024. This involves a growing commitment to preventative action, using our expertise to work in partnership with communities locally, nationally and internationally to prevent drowning.

The closing date for this vacancy is the 11th of November 2018, with interviews scheduled to be held in the week commencing the 26th of November 2018.
