Systems Technician - Mechanical (Redcar to Skegness)

Home/Field Based (covering the North, predominantly the Redcar to Skegness area)

£25,662 - £30,190 DOE Plus Benefits including Pension, 26 Days’ Holiday (rising with service) + Bank Holidays, Employee Recognition Scheme, Enhanced Maternity, Paternity and Adoption Schemes, Sports & Social Clubs, Season Ticket Loans, & Many More

Our client is a charity that provides a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service and a seasonal lifeguard service.

Their Lifeboat crews and Lifeguards need a dedicated, professional and talented team behind them so whatever the weather, their Lifeboats and Lifeguard assets can operate to the highest technical standards.

As a Systems Technician within the North Division you will cover the maintenance and repair of assets, predominately in the Redcar to Skegness area. The ideal candidate needs to reside within a 25 mile radius of Scarborough. You will be expected to work closely with Station Mechanics, volunteers and lifeguards to carry out planned maintenance, fault diagnosis and repairs on various pieces of equipment which could be anything from a Lifeguard Quad Bike to a brand new state of the art Shannon Class Lifeboat and SLARS launching rig.

Part of your duties as a Systems Technician will include trials of existing, repaired or new equipment so you will need to possess and demonstrate an excellent mechanical and electrical knowledge. You should have a desire to stay current in the use of existing technology and a willingness to learn and be involved in the roll-out of new equipment and technology which is constantly changing within the organisation.

To be considered, you will need:

- A time-served engineering apprenticeship or experience in mechanical, electrical and/or electronic engineering

- An NVQ Level 3 qualification (or equivalent) in a mechanical, electrical or electronic discipline

- A full driving licence

At least one of the following is also key:

- Wide knowledge of diesel and petrol engines/electrical systems

- Marine or plant experience

- Experience of construction/modification of electronic equipment

- Experience of the repair and maintenance of electronic equipment

As this is a sea-going appointment, you will need to satisfy the institution's medical and eyesight standards.

A towing licence would be beneficial, as would experience of PAT testing, lorry mounted cranes or mobile scaffolding. A Driver CPC or forklift truck licence would also be an advantage.

This role is suitable for someone that is self-motivated and willing to go that extra mile. You will work either as a part of a team or under your own initiative to the highest of standards with a first fix approach to return assets back on service as soon as possible.

The role requires you to be part of a duty rota and be expected, when required, to work unsociable hours.  There is considerable travel involved and you will be expected to work away from home on a regular basis. The predominant area will be from Redcar to Skegness, however you may be asked to work with the remainder of the North division and other geographical areas of the organisation as required.

This role does not have a fixed place of work. Your place of work will be any place i.e. Lifeboat Stations and/or Support Centres as nominated by our client in the North Division and within a reasonable daily travelling distance as required for the proper performance of your duties.

The closing date for applications is the 11th November 2018, with interviews scheduled to be held on the week commencing the 19th November 2018.

Our client’s staff and volunteers have been saving lives at sea without prejudice for nearly 200 years. They respect and value diversity of background, skills and perspectives within their teams, and consider it essential to help them deliver a world-class lifesaving service. They are an inclusive organisation and welcome applications from everyone. In addition to having the skills needed for the role, our client also looks for applicants who share their commitment to living their values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable), and helping them work towards their goal of halving drowning in the UK and Ireland by 2024. This involves a growing commitment to preventative action, using expertise to work in partnership with communities locally, nationally and internationally to prevent drowning.
