Mechanic / Coxswain
Mechanic / Coxswain
From £30,671 (dependent on experience)
The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. A vacancy has arisen for a full time Mechanic / Coxswain at Skegness Lifeboat Station.
Our full time mechanics contribute to the operational effectiveness of the lifeboat station through the operation, maintenance and repair of the lifeboats and their associated machinery and equipment.
As a Mechanic / Coxswain, you will need excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills to build effective relationships with volunteers at the lifeboat station, the supporters locally and RNLI staff beyond. You will work closely alongside the existing full time station Mechanic, and play an important and active part in the training and assessment of volunteer crewmembers to the RNLI’s competence standards. Inspiring their motivation and progress, you’ll take them on seagoing exercises, identifying ways they can improve and imparting your valuable knowledge - so that when an emergency shout does occur, you, your crew and your lifeboat will be absolutely prepared.
To be considered for the role of Mechanic / Coxswain, you will need:
- To have successfully completed a marine or commercial engineering apprenticeship, or have relevant marine and mechanical experience
- Experience of maintaining high-speed, diesel engines and the associated electrical and electronic systems of fast modern boats of up to 20 metres in length.
- To be confident using a variety of different computer systems.
To keep flexibility with cover, ideally applicants should have Coxswain skills or have the aspiration and commitment to train in this area.
The closing date for this role is the 25th November 2018. Interviews are scheduled for the week commencing the 10th December 2018.
Our staff and volunteers have been saving lives at sea without prejudice for nearly 200 years. We respect and value diversity of background, skills and perspectives within our teams, and consider it essential to help us deliver a world-class lifesaving service. We are an inclusive organisation and welcome applications from everyone. In addition to having the skills needed for the role, we also look for applicants who share our commitment to living our RNLI values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable), and helping us work towards our goals of halving drowning in the UK and Ireland by 2024. This involves a growing commitment to preventative action, using our expertise to work in partnership with communities locally, nationally and internationally to prevent drowning.
