CHIEF SCIENTIFIC ADVISER (CSA)

(Permanent part time London based role).

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government’s (MHCLG) job is to create great places to live and work, and to give more power to local people to shape what happens in their area. MHCLG is at the heart of the Prime Minister’s objective of making the UK a country that works for everyone.

Government Chief Scientific Advisers (CSAs) aim to ensure, through advising Ministers and senior officials, that policy decisions are evidence-based and underpinned by the highest-quality science and engineering evidence and understanding.  They aim to help develop departments as intelligent customers for scientific and technical advice, including on ethical matters, and are the key conduit to broker in external expertise. They are well networked externally and provide cutting-edge insights and thought leadership.

The CSA role in MHCLG occupies one of the most senior and influential positions within the department; with the post holder directly accountable to Ministers and to the Permanent Secretary Melanie Dawes.  The CSA will be embedded at the highest levels of the Department and will progress and implement our approach to systems thinking and will help develop policy going forwards.

A key part of the role of CSA in MHCLG is to support the Department and its new Building Safety Programme in scientific advice following the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

This role will suit an individual who is an outstanding scientific/engineering leader, with evidence of international standing and well connected to academic and business science and engineering communities.  We are also looking for someone collaborative and inclusive, who is confident and credible with a range of senior stakeholders.  We strongly encourage candidates from both inside and outside the Civil Service.

If you think you fit the bill we would like to hear from you.

This is a part time permanent appointment based in central London for three days a week.  However, we welcome candidates to discuss their working pattern with us.

A basic salary of up to £120,000 pro rata is on offer.  For further information about the role and details of how to apply, please download the candidate pack at https://www.civilservicejobs.service.gov.uk/csr/login.cgi, reference number 1611840.   If you would like to have an informal discussion about the role, please email Recruitment@communities.gov.uk or call 0303 444 8111 during office hours.

Applications should be received by COP on Sunday 6th January 2019.
