RACE (Remote Applications in Challenging Environments) is a business unit of the UK Atomic Energy Authority specialising in robotics handling and automated systems. As part of the global programme for fusion, RACE is developing remote handling systems for the next generations of power stations. RACE is also at the centre of the UK effort to apply novel technologies to all challenging and harsh environments for the protection of people and advancement of industry. 

As a Graduate Remote Handling Operations Engineer you will be trained to work on the deployment of robotic systems for hazardous environments and will have the opportunity to work across a range of international projects. The work will include tool and component design, remote handling task development and the operation of a full remote handling system. 

Key areas of responsibility will include: 

-Designing tasks, equipment and tooling so that complex operations can be undertaken using robotic remote handling system. 
-Derivation of an operational method for remote handling tasks 
-Specification of physical and virtual mock-ups 
-Developing sequence descriptions and remote handling operating procedures 
-Assist in the shift management of remote handling and manual operations 
-Reporting and presentation of feasibility assessments and operating procedures 

Please note that this role will not form part of the UKAEA Graduate Scheme.

Knowledge skills and experience 

Essential 
-A recognised HND or degree in Mechanical Engineering 
-Experience of a range of mechanical engineering fabrication techniques 
-An interest in robotics 

Special requirements: 
-During some operational periods shift work may be required 

-As part of the selection process you may be expected to complete work based simulation exercises and a personality profile either online or onsite.
