The role

We are seeking a Project Officer to provide maternity cover in our materials characterisation laboratories

Skills and experience


  • Experience of mechanical testing specifically tensile, fatigue and creep testing (preferably with Instron and Zwick testing machines);
  • Experience of metallographic preparation for optical microscopy;
  • Experience in ensuring that the laboratories and users comply with all the relevant Health & Safety legislation.


  • Knowledge of metallurgy;
  • Experience of using strain-gauges for strain evaluation and residual stress measurement;
  • Experience of metallographic preparation for SEM imaging and EBSD analysis;
  • Experience of conducting mechanical testing at elevated temperatures;
  • Experience of Digital Image Correlation (DIC) applied to mechanical testing;
  • Knowledge of residual stress characterisation;

You will have a degree, or equivalent, in a relevant scientific subject and significant hands-on experience of materials analytical techniques. Good organisational and team working skills are essential.
