Your Responsibilities
 
RACE (Remote Applications in Challenging Environments) develop and operate remote handling systems which use the latest technology in robotics for the next generations of power stations.
 
As a Mechanical Technician, you will build, maintain and operate our advanced remote handling systems at our unique facility in Abingdon.
 
We are looking for proactive, motivated and technically skilled fitters to be trained by us as a remote handling Mechanical Technician.
 
You will work on a wide range of electromechanical devices varying in size, from small hand tools up to a 400kg capacity robotic arm with a reach of 10 metres.
 
As a Mechanical Technician you will:
 
- Support the assembly, commissioning, operation and maintenance of specialist electromechanical equipment
- Work with telemanipulators, transporters, welding, cutting, handling and inspection devices
- Maintain complex electromechanical equipment to a high standard of precision and cleanliness, often in challenging environments with high levels of PPE
- Create new and edit existing technical documentation 
- Support new project activities and highlight any design/manufacturing issues
- Perform general mechanical workshop activities, including precision assembly, fitting, fabricating, turning and milling
 
Knowledge, skills and experience
 
Essential:
 
- Experience as a Mechanical Technician, gained in an engineering environment
- Experience with MS Excel and Word
- The proven ability to work from detailed drawings and schematics
- A recognised engineering apprenticeship (or equivalent) and a relevant qualification in engineering/workshop technology
 
Desirable:
 
- A qualification and experience in the safe operation of conventional workshop machine tools
- Experience in generating formal maintenance documentation
- Forklift truck driving experience
- CSCS experienced worker
 
Special requirements: - The appointee may be required to work in Beryllium and Radiation controlled areas. All necessary training and registration for this will be provided by UKAEA.
 
Additional Information
 
The JET Shutdown operations are staffed in shifts and the appointee must be prepared to work shifts or be on call as required. However, this is only during shutdown preparation and operation. (Not full-time shift work. On average about 25% of the year). Typical shift pattern when in remote operations are 06:00-15:30 for 2 weeks, one week on base hours (37.5 hours) and 15:15-01:15 for 2 weeks.

Selection Method(s):
- As part of the selection process you may be expected to complete work-based simulation exercises
- As part of the selection process you will be expected to complete a fitting test, manufacturing a small component with basic hand tools.
