We have a superb new opportunity for an experienced Lead Mechanical Design Engineer with a keen interest in cutting edge technology and a desire to design real-world products from a blank sheet. The Lead Mechanical Engineer will join a well-established and highly successful company in Bedfordshire focusing on design and manufacturing of special purpose equipment for the consumer products and pharmaceutical manufacturing markets. The Mechanical Design Engineer`s duties will include brainstorming, researching, designing, specifying machines and control systems from concept and prototype through to finished products.

As an experienced member of an exceptionally gifted and enthusiastic Engineering team you will be delivering solutions and designs for the next generation of technology products, participating in the complete project development lifecycle. This is a perfect vacancy for someone with a passion for designing and prototyping Mechanical/ Electro-Mechanical products and assemblies, developing bespoke and innovative industrial automation / special purpose machinery and mechanical systems to deliver increased efficiency and productivity.


* Hands-on Mechanical Engineering and CAD based design of the company’s bespoke special purpose equipment
* Creation of detailed 3D models and drawings suitable for manufacture for both standard and custom machines
* Design precision assemblies and assist with testing of equipment
* Conducting feasibility studies for new concepts and support the sales team
* Recommending modifications for systems
* Preparing production documentation such as Bills of Materials in accordance with company procedures, compiling manufacturing packs to assist fitting engineers with assembly of machinery

Lead Mechanical Engineer Requirements:

* Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent practical experience in Mechanical Engineering or similar
* Extensive use of 3D &2D CAD system, preferably Creo Elements / Direct, but other systems will be considered.
* Proven experience in design of complex assemblies including pneumatics, machined components, rotating elements, sensors, actuators, conveyors, drive mechanisms, gears, press tools etc
* Cable management, routing and consideration for electrical components
* Use of MRP / ERP / CRM systems (ideally Epicor) and CAD data management + MS office products
* Experience of design change processes, DFMA and value engineering
* Mentoring and project lead skills, ability to conduct design reviews
* Strong problem solving and excellent time management skills
* Ability to travel globally on occasions to visit customers or suppliers if required
