The R&D team of a growing life science technology company have a brand new position of Senior Assay Development Scientist (Biochemist/ Chemist etc) at their state-of-the-art facility in Oxford. A key member of the R&D team the Assay Development Scientist (Biochemist / Chemist etc) will use their background in biochemical assay development to adapt existing commercially available assays to work effectively on the company’s highly advanced microfluidic Lab-on-chip devices. This exciting new microfluidics “lab-on chip” technology spin-out is set to revolutionise the life science, healthcare and biotech sectors. Their novel microfluidics platform can automate tests currently conducted in traditional test tube methods offering unprecedented control, accuracy and flexibility. The technology has exciting potential and as such has significant financial backing from its parent company to bring the technology to market.

With a background in Biochemistry the Assay Development Scientist be expected to adapt existing commercially available protocols (e.g. nucleic acid amplification techniques) to work effectively on the devices. Duties will stretch too: capturing and defining protocol specifications; designing and testing automated workflows; creating innovative solutions to the challenges encountered; and transferring the results of research to the product development team.

This is a technically challenging position. The Assay Development Scientist (Biochemist) will be strong experimentally with an ability to solve complex technical problems. They will be an excellent communicator able to liaise across multidisciplinary functions at all levels.

Requirements – Assay Development Scientist ( Biochemist / Biochemistry)

* A PhD or equivalent in Biochemistry / immunohistochemistry/ chemistry or relevant industrial experience.

Experience of:

* Experience in the analysis and handling of biomolecules
* Competent user of a wide range of scientific laboratory equipment
* Highly organized with outstanding attention to detail
* Flexible approach and ability to quickly learn and apply new skills & processes
* Outstanding interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills, both written and oral
* Desirable:
* Familiarity with formal project management frameworks, preferably Prince2

* Experience working with microfluidic devices
* Experience working in biochemistry laboratories and familiarity with biological hazards and safe working practices for biological material handling
* Experience working in a small company, ideally in the life science, bio-tech or medical device sectors
* Experience working within a multidisciplinary product development team
* Experience in NGS, PCR, Mass Spectrometry, ELISA, Gel electrophoresis, protein analysis, cell culture, assay development etc.
* Candidates with experience in the development of genomics and/or proteomics based assays will be at an advantage
