Are you a mechanical design engineer with the ability to create novel mechanical designs from concept to realisation?

The Materials Research Facility (MRF) is a state-of-the-art research facility created to analyse material properties in support of both fission and fusion energy research. The MRF is currently consolidating its scientific capabilities and is expected to grow into a full operational laboratory with 5 hot-cells for sample preparation and 20 shielded research rooms for scientific evaluation. At the MRF small-scale active samples can be prepared in the hot cells before being studied using a range of scientific instruments (e.g. electronic microscopes, thermophysical instruments, micromechanical testers, etc.).

Key accountabilities for the MRF design engineer will include developing creative design solutions for integration of sensitive scientific equipment for work in a harsh environment.
Further the role will involve engineering of transport systems for radioactive specimens, adaptation of equipment for sample preparation, and the development of robotic systems for remote handling of active materials.

Other areas of accountability will include:

-Creation and design of effective remote handling mechanical and robotic devices and tooling from concept through systems specifications to detail designs.
-Substantiation of designs through hand calculations and analysis.
-Supervision of engineers and draughtsman to maintain high design standards
-Liaison with customers and/or suppliers.
-Drive and completion of complex design activities within allotted time and with high efficiency, ensuring designs are compliant with the relevant design codes.
-Managing the acceptance, testing and commissioning of complex mechanical systems.

Knowledge skills and experience

Essential
-Engineering council recognised mechanical engineering degree or equivalent experience
-Experience in mechanism design and use of 3D CAD
-Experience in design substantiation analysis using hand calculations
-Good working knowledge of structural and thermal engineering, solid mechanics and engineering materials
-Competence in generating technical documents and specifications
-Ability to work as part of a larger team or group

Desirable
-Experience in engineering design in a nuclear context
-Experience in finite element techniques
-Experience in use of MATLAB or equivalent
-Membership of a Professional Engineering Institution

-Work in radiation and beryllium-controlled areas may be required as part of the role

PLEASE NOTE THE LEVEL 4 ROLE OFFERS A SALARY OF £30,341- £34,479 (+ £3,100 MPP) AND THE LEVEL 5 ROLE OFFERS A SALARY OF £39,543 - £44,936 (+ £6,000 MPP). YOUR LEVEL WILL BE ASSESSED AT INTERVIEW.
