Are you interested in using new technology to implement robotic solutions for hazardous environments?

Do you have experience setting up and commissioning robotic systems as well as producing formal operations documentation?

If so, we have an exciting opportunity for an experienced engineer to work on and manage the design and deployment of robotic systems with the opportunity to work and collaborate across a range of international projects. You will be involved in component design, remote handling task development and leading a technical team operating robotics in our multi-million pound environment.

You will be working within our RACE (Remote Applications in Challenging Environments) business unit, which is part of the UK Atomic Energy Authority, specialising in robotics handling. As part of the global programme for fusion, RACE is developing remote handling systems for the next generations of power stations and is at the centre of the UK efforts to apply novel technologies to all challenging environments for the protection of people and advancement of industry.

Areas of responsibility will include:

- Managing a shift team operating a remote handling system to maintain and upgrade high-value complex machinery in an inaccessible area
- Designing equipment and tooling so that complex operations can be undertaken using a robotic remote handling system
- Completing and presenting feasibility assessments for remote handling tasks
- Specifying physical and virtual mock-ups
- Developing sequence descriptions and remote handling operating procedures

This is a great opportunity to join a dynamic and rapidly growing department which designs, procures and operates the wide range equipment used for maintenance and upgrade of the JET Tokamak as well other commercial projects. The RACE team has more than 35,000 hours of operational experience supporting this world leading fusion science program. This is an exciting opportunity to ensure the delivery of future JET shutdown programmes and provide Operations Engineering expertise to projects across the RACE portfolio.

Knowledge, skills and experience

Essential

- A recognised qualification in Engineering to at least HND level, OR equivalent practical experience
- Experience in supervising technicians
- Experience in generating formal operations documentation or working within a highly regulated environment
- An understanding of Written Safe System of Work and its use to control plant and personnel risks
- The ability to respond to unexpected issues proactively
- Experience in the operation of robotic equipment and tools
- A proven track record in delivering to time and budget requirements

Desirable

- Knowledge and experience of machinery and industrial robotics regulations, or in the commissioning of such systems
- Registration with a professional body - EngTech, IEng, or CEng
- There is potential for this role to include line management of up to four Operations Engineers, so experience of line management would be an advantage

Special requirements:

- The JET shutdown operations are staffed in shifts and the appointee must be prepared to work shifts or be on call as required. However, this is only during shutdown preparation and operation. (Not full-time shift work. On average about 25% of the year)
- Typical shift pattern when in remote operations are 06:00-15:30 for 2 weeks, one week on base hours (37.5 hours) and 15:15-01:15 for 2 weeks
- The appointee may be required to work in Beryllium and Radiation controlled areas. All necessary training and registration for this will be provided by United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority
