We currently have exciting opportunities for Lead Mechanical Engineers, who will truly lead development and progression of our most challenging technologies and projects, and who bring experience, flare and diversity to our dynamic and enthusiastic team.

As a Lead Mechanical Engineer, you will manage the work and development of a team of experienced mechanical engineers and provide leadership for the technical execution of large multi-disciplinary projects. You will provide specialist technical knowledge and strategic direction in a complex field, demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the mechanical engineering toolkit and have the ability to advise on technical solutions, designs and/or critical plant operational issues.

You will develop and implement policies and guidance on best practice, as well as producing peer-reviewed technical papers/reports and ensuring adherence to accepted standards. You will make or facilitate timely critical technical decisions that steer the design solution towards the next level of definition in a timely manner, whilst meeting critical performance requirements and managing risk. The role encompasses the full project lifecycle, from developing a technical execution strategy, to concept development, through to delivery of the engineering solution.

For this lead technical role, you will be leading one or more of the following activities, for which existing experience is welcomed:

- Design work on fusion reactor `matter-injection` sub-systems, for delivering fuel to the reactor or helping to mitigate the effects of a plasma `disruption`, from concept through to detailed design on enhancement programs for CCFE`s facilities as well as for future fusion devices

- Participate in site level projects or operations as a representative of the Engineering function or other area of expertise, including a role of responsible officer for complex/critical plant and processes

- Manage the work and development of a Section of employees, co-ordinating this team`s efforts in line with the UKAEA Central Engineering Department`s objectives and The Authority's organisational mission and strategies. Agree work objectives and guide development planning of staff in the Section and take an active role in the recruitment of new staff

- Lead the technical delivery of projects including those involving an international customer and/or international collaborators or suppliers

The UKAEA hosts and manages the JET nuclear fusion energy experiment on behalf of the EU and is also home to the UK`s MAST-U fusion energy experiment. UKAEA also works with industry and other third parties to develop new technologies currently in Remote Handling and Materials research.

Knowledge, skills and experience

Essential

- A relevant engineering degree or equivalent
- Chartered Engineer status with a suitable professional institution
- Ability to perform exploratory design calculations using first principles
- Proven capability in engineering analysis and a good working knowledge of engineering materials and their properties
- Experience with relevant environmental factors such as vacuum and transient magnetic fields
- Good working knowledge of structural and thermal engineering, solid mechanics and engineering materials
- Experience with working to design standards (particularly pressure vessel standards)
- Leading teams and supervising other staff
- Good communication and technical writing skills

Desirable

- Experience in the design, construction, or operation of nuclear fusion `matter-injection` sub-systems, such as pellet injection, gas puffing or disruption mitigation systems
- Experience in staff management including management of workload, giving and receiving feedback, appraisal and professional development
- Experience in on-plant operations, or responsibility for resolving issues on complex/critical plant and associated processes
