H3AT is responsible for the advancement of enabling technologies for the international fusion market. These projects embody our mission to develop nuclear fusion as a source of energy generation, demonstrating the technology with a view to it ultimately becoming commercialised.
Who are we looking for?
Are you an experienced engineer with a background in finding innovative solutions to complex problems? Do you have an interest in contributing to the development of abundant, safe, and carbon-free electricity for a cleaner planet?
If so, UKAEA has an exciting opportunity for a development engineer to apply their knowledge and experience to creating solutions for systems exposed to some of the harshest environments possible. Forming part of H3AT’s Tritium Innovation Unit, you will be responsible for developing and leading complex projects, including the advancement of tritium experiments and process plants in collaboration with UK industry, academia and national institutes.
Key areas of responsibility will include:
- Driving projects that may cover low Technology Readiness Level concept development through to working with commercial-off-the-shelf products and to life extension of installations.
- Sharing your experience and expertise to provide state-of-the-art knowledge to UKAEA design engineers and technologists
- Key role/leading planning, delivery and evaluation of complex experimental projects that address prototyping and verification of experimental systems and plants and the effects of harsh environments on performance
- Managing small multi-disciplinary teams (up to 5 engineers, scientists and technicians)
- Proposing, secure funding and contributing to delivery of novel projects aligned with internal strategy
- Working with external collaborators
You may be required to train and register as a Beryllium and classified radiation worker. All necessary training will be provided.
Please note this position has been evaluated at both level 4 and 5. The successful candidate's grade will be determined at interview. The level 4 role offers a salary of £36,397 to £38,620 inclusive of MPP and the level 5 role offers a salary of £49,396 to £52,293 inclusive of MPP.
Essential skills, experience and competence required
- Degree or higher in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, process engineering, or similar.
- Experience of developing complex equipment or experiments.
- Experience in implementation of specialist engineering / science skills with a background in multi-disciplinary industry or R&D based programmes.
- Previous experience in the writing and reviewing of instructions and work control documentation.
Desirable skills, experience and competence
- Knowledge of issues affecting material and component performance in harsh environments.
- Knowledge and experience of preparing research proposals.
- Experience of overseeing technicians, junior staff and/or students.
- Possession or progress towards accreditation with a professional body (e.g. CEng).
- A basic understanding of radiological hazards.
