The Submarine Support Engineering (SSE) are contracted to provide engineering and design services to the MOD, particularly the in-service submarines (ISM) project team who from part of the defence engineering and support organisation. The Advanced Planning Team are responsible for identifying the work package using a variety of data sources for forth coming submarine maintenance periods and completing an indicative planning schedule (IPS) for each maintenance period.


The role
As an Advanced Planning Engineer, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. Your contribution will directly impact the readiness, operational effectiveness, and safety of in-service submarines for the MoD, which is crucial for national defence and security.

Day to day, using your technical knowledge in engineering, you'll identify maintenance needs, gather data, and create indicative planning schedules that ensure that maintenance periods are well organised and executed efficiently. You will also:

  • Use data sources including the Through Lifeboat Plan and the Submarine Definition Database, to identify work packages for upcoming submarine maintenance periods.
  • You will complete an Indicative Planning Schedule (Key Date Schedule) for maintenance work. Following approval, this schedule will be further refined to support a number of review periods prior to handover to the Joint Project Team for final planning, enablement and execution.
  • You will resolve any ambiguities within these activities whilst ensuring that all work requirements are clearly defined and achievable.
  • You will liaise regularly with a variety of stakeholders to ensure accuracy and achievement of the required quality to satisfy our exacting customer.


This role offers a balanced work life with 35 hours a week, including a hybrid setup where you'll be on-site 1 to 2 days weekly. Optionally, a compressed 80day fortnight allows you to work your hours over fewer days, granting an extra day off. Monthly, you'll travel to our sites across the UK including: HMNB Clyde and HMNB Devonport. The role is based at Stoke Gifford, Bristol, BS16 1EJ.


Essential experience of the Advanced Planning Engineer

  • Good knowledge of submarine/surface ship operations and maintenance activities.
  • Engineering knowledge and experience required with a minimum expectation of time served in mechanical / electrical / structural / naval architect engineering perspective, with additional years of engineering delivery experience.


Qualifications for the Advanced Planning Engineer

  • Level 3 Apprenticeship in a mechanical / electrical/ structural / naval architect
  • Level 3 Engineering qualification relevant to the role (NVQ, SVQ, City & Guilds)


The successful candidate must be able to achieve SC security clearance for this role.
