About the role:

The Applied Acoustic Physicist will be involved in all aspects of acoustic projects from a maritime perspective. Working with various levels of seniority from a business perspective, including the domain lead, task leads, project managers. This individual will support projects throughout lifecycle, involved with everything from capturing requirements, through planning, task conduct and data analysis to delivering results (either written reports or presentation to stakeholders).


You'll conduct experimental measurement and numerical prediction using the test facilities at the Haslar, Gosport site in the UK (for hydro-acoustic activities) with the potential for occasional travel in Europe, should further facilities for projects be required (including a high-performance computing cluster).


This will be a unique opportunity to be involved with the experimentation and measurements of acoustics/noise produced by maritime platforms (submarine propellers). This involves hands on training and development in a unique environment supporting high importance analysis using mathematical methods to investigate both from practical and theoretical perspectives.


What will I be doing?
You'll be involved in all aspects of cutting-edge projects, supporting in a range of analytical and laboratory work. As part of your role, you will carry out technical trials, also supporting in design and report writing;


  • Recognise and resolve non-standard, challenging occurrences and problems with work assignment
  • Perform engineering/technical assignments requiring the integration of a wide range of engineering/technical discipline
  • Prepare written documentation on whole or segments of overall project
  • Exercise considerable discretion on a variety of complex assignments
  • Work within time and budget constraints to identifying innovative solutions to customers' problems
  • Production and delivery of tasks within time and budget constraints
  • Provision of responses to customers' technical requirements within agreed timeframes

 What do I need?
You'll need some of the following:


  • MEng/MSc in relevant technical applied science/engineering subject appropriately aligned with acoustical/optical/fluid measurements/modelling
  • Or relevant technical experience working in a science or engineering role.
  • Membership of, or suitability to join, an aligned professional institution, e.g. IOA, IOP, IMechE, IET.
  • Mathematical ability necessary to undertake turbulence, acoustic and vibration calculations/predictions/data manipulation in MatLab and Excel.
  • Good analytical skills and evaluative judgment based on the analysis of factual and qualitative information in complicated or novel situations
  • Experience of drafting technical documents, e.g. reports, technical specifications and project plans.
  • Awareness of relevant health and safety measures and processes



Highly desirable (but not essential) criteria include the following:

  • Interest in music, music technology or ability to play an instrument
  • Experience of model-scale testing, design, preparation use of models, ideally in hydrodynamic/acoustic testing
  • Experience, ideally experience of, noise, vibration and flow measurement techniques.
  • Experience of optical/laser-based vibration and flow measurement methods.
  • Understanding of engineering mechanical design processes, assurance calculations and low-volume manufacture.
  • Familiarity with the UK Military and/or Commercial Marine industry.
