WHAT YOU'LL DO

The Traction Battery Test Laboratory is part of Powertrain Test Operations (PTTO) function within Product Engineering. The team maintains productive and safe workflow from the Battery Test facilities, delivering high quality electrical characterisation and performance data at the cell, module and pack level. The primary focus of the team is on enabling the operational delivery of high-quality test data to support the Design Verification (DV) of traction battery pack systems for hybrid and electric vehicles.

The Technician role will operate across the facility conducting activities in order to ensure that productive output is maintained, will be responsible for providing and maintaining common standardised operational processes, and will seek to optimise operational capability through regular involvement in continuous improvement activities. You will be required to become highly proficient in test installation, test equipment, instrumentation connections, startup and monitoring of test automation systems (Maccor/Arbin/Lynx) and issue reporting and resolution. Additional responsibilities are identified in the “Key Responsibilities” section.

Once you are successfully through the assessment process you will be supported to enable you to achieve your professional goals. Completing JLR safety training (Senior Authorised Person) will also be required on joining the department, prior to performing any work on high voltage electrical systems.

Key Accountabilties and Responsibilities

Start, stop, running, monitoring and shutdown of any test schedules assigned to them.

● Communication of test chamber status via status and utilisation documents.

● Rectification/diagnosis of issues, engagement of test engineers where needed.

● Identification/acquisition of appropriate test scripts from battery test engineers.

● Creation of internal work instructions and local process documents.

● Conduct test setup activities; Material handling, rig fabrication, rig assemble, test instrumentation, HV & LV electrical connections and cooling connections. ● Monitoring & validation of test data quality.

● Proposals to support test plan modification based on results.

● Carry out any work or FMS job cards assigned by their supervisor.

● Fabricate and assemble jigs from technical drawings ready for test installation.

● Install/uninstall test components into chamber.

● Build cooling rigs to provided schematics.

● Support area 5s activities.

● Carry out goods inwards and outwards checks.

● Ensure all tooling is within calibration and raise non-compliance with supervisor.

● Responsible for working within and maintaining a safe working environment.

● Update CCAR with any facility and project issues.

● Aid in material handling activities.

● Attend training courses to ensure personal development.

● Support Training of peers to Technician Level.

● Undertake any other work as directed by their line manager in connection with their job as may be requested.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

● Apprenticeship or NVQ3 in an engineering related subject, or equivalent experience preferred.

● Prepared to undertake vocational studies and attain an NVQ Level 4 qualification.

● Demonstrated ability to set-up and run automated testing.

● Electrical wiring qualification/experience.

· Harness Creation/Modification/Commission

· Soldering

· Crimping

· Completed checks – continuity/insulation

● Hand fabrication skills to create and assemble test jigs.

● Knowledge of Health and Safety requirements, Risk Assessment, COSHH and MSDS.

● Commitment, flexibility, self-motivation, robust clear communication

Knowledge/experience of working in a test facility.

● A working knowledge of vehicle powertrain configurations including High Voltage / HEV / BEV applications.

● Computer literate, including Microsoft Office competency.

● Ability to read and understand technical drawings.

Desireable

Ideally educated to level 4 qualification in Engineering, Science or Mathematical discipline.

● Qualification or experience in Electrochemistry would be beneficial.

● Experience of operating a modern automated test cell; including Start, stopping, running, monitoring and basic fault diagnosis.

● Experience in using powertrain test cell instrumentation. 

● Experience working in HV/high risk environments.

● Fork Lift Truck (FLT) experience.

● Basic programming appreciation.

● CAN knowledge (CANalyser experience).

● A full UK driving license with less than 6 penalty points, no disqualification, 2 years accident-free record.

● Understand how and where permit to works would be used.
