WHAT TO EXPECT

The purpose of the role is to develop, maintain, verify and validate JLR’s library of electro-thermal battery models to support the next generation of traction battery systems.  Having access to a state-of-the-art material laboratory, as well as state-of-the-art cell characterization laboratories, you’ll be responsible for developing JLR’s battery performance models which support our virtual verification activities and underlie our product design strategy. The role is based within our Powertrain Engineering team and will support key electrification teams in the delivery of new electric vehicle programmes.

You'll find the ideal balance between model performance and speed and will liase with our academic partners in order to develop innovative battery modelling methodologies to help achieve customers objectives.  As part of this role, you will support collaborative research with key leading UK universities and other external partners. 

The role is part of Advanced Battery Engineering function and contributes to the development of new technologies and features to product delivery. This is an opportunity to join a team that are working at the forefront of battery pack development, and is making significant advances in modelling, testing and overall concept design.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Support the electrochemical cell modelling roadmap
  • Electro-thermal modelling of cell (1D & 3D)
  • Lead battery virtual verification for concept and future vehicle programmes.
  • Lead the development of system identification methodologies for battery models
  • Lead the development of new experimental characterization methodologies to be used for model development
  • Support test planning and facilities development activities both internal and external
  • Support data elaboration from cell/module and pack tests
  • Provide technical support on projects in mainstream engineering
  • Support research projects investigating aspects battery cell performance related to cell parameterisation for accurate and effective Battery Management System, to deliver best pack performance over the life of the vehicle.
  • Undertake any other work as directed by their line manager in connection with their job as may be requested
  • File patent applications in order to protect new and innovative ideas

ESSENTIAL

  • Matlab Simulink/Simscape modelling experience
  • 1D / 3D modelling experience
  • Electrochemist background at degree level, PhD preferable
  • Fundamental understanding of battery cell working principles: mass transfer, chemical kinetics, conservation equations
  • Experience of cell/module/pack testing
  • Hands-on experience of battery cell testing and data analysis

DESIRABLE

  • Co-simulation experience in version control systems (SVN, Git or other platforms)
  • >2 years’ experience in dynamic modelling and simulation
  • Battery characterization methods at both cell and material level
  • Python programming: Numpy and PyBaMM
  • Concurrent use of Python and Matlab for co-simulation
  • Experience in Continuous Integration Continuous Deployment (CICD) of software/models
  • Experience with object-oriented modelling
  • Experience in Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), Hybrid Pulse Power Characterisation (HPPC) and model parametrisation tests in general
  • Experience with acausal modelling (Modelica, Simscape or other platforms)
  • System identification techniques
  • Experience of planning, co-ordination, delivery and reporting of requirements such as Product Creation Delivery System (PCDS)
  • A working knowledge of electrical systems and development processes, such as those used at Jaguar Land Rover
  • Previous experience of working with Universities and Research partners
