The role

As a Chief Engineer - Technical Governance, Design, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary where you'll enable us to fully support the Major Infrastructure Projects (MIP) in flight and provide infrastructure that's fit for purpose.

Day to day, you'll carry out a leadership role which sits across all the projects within Devonport Royal Doc. You'll focus on the technical governance, quality and risks of the projects (independently from project delivery).

  • Chairing design reviews.
  • Overseeing our independent document review and approval process.
  • Defining engineering standards.
  • Influencing the project and escalating issues as and when risks are identified.
  • Being able to provide definitive advice and assurance to the Head of the Design Authority that meets requirements and obligations.

This is a full time, permanent role offering hybrid working solutions from our sites at either Devonport Royal Dockyard, Plymouth or Babcock Technology Centre, Bristol.

Essential experience of the Chief Engineer - Technical Governance, Design

  • Sound understanding of engineering design practice (design and facility design).
  • Ideally coming from an architectural background, but not essential.
  • Understanding of design governance and assurance, ideally in the nuclear industry.
  • Understanding and experience of validation and verification of engineering requirements (V&V and systems engineering).
  • Understanding and experience of configuration management.
  • Working knowledge of relevant engineering office computer applications, for example MathCAD, Navisworks.

Qualifications for the Chief Engineer - Technical Governance, Design

  • A degree in an appropriate engineering, architecture, or technical discipline (or equivalent).
  • Chartered professional (or working towards).

Nuclear (training can be provide where required):

  • Module 1 NPFC Nuclear Plant Foundation Course.
  • Module 2 NFC Nuclear Fundamentals Course.

The successful candidate must be sole UK national who is able to achieve SC and NNPPI security clearance for this role.
