The role

As the Chief Engineer, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. You'll provide leadership for Cavendish Nuclear to ensure consolidated engineering support across the business with strong and transparent links throughout the global business.

The Chief Engineer leads on the provision of high-quality capability (people, process and tools) for internal and external support requirements across a whole of business engineering approach that will facilitate the required coverage and capacity for the business.

You'll hold the Company Technical Authority and sets the framework for governance, assurance and technical authority structure across all engineering and technical activities within the business, to ensure alignment with regulatory and customer requirements.

Duties include:

  • Develop engineering strategy for Cavendish Nuclear ensuring alignment with the wider Nuclear sector and Babcock functions to ensure strategic alignment
  • Support delivery of companywide (Cavendish Nuclear, Nuclear Sector and Babcock) Engineering initiatives with primary focus on consistency of implementation across the Company
  • Responsible for overall health of assurance process as it relates to engineering activities in Cavendish Nuclear
  • Provide independent decision making in the event of differing professional opinion within the Business Stream engineering communities
  • Ensure the right capability, processes and tools are available for use across the company and engage with the wider Nuclear sector and Babcock functions to ensure strategic alignment
  • Support Heads of Engineering in delivery when requested (e.g., bringing/accessing wider technical knowledge, solutions, or subject matter experts from wider Nuclear Sector and/or Babcock and/or other industry sectors)
  • Own the Cavendish Nuclear engineering arrangements and accountable for their adequacy, maintenance, continuous improvement.
  • Identify long-term skills/capability requirements and subsequent development of plans to meet future demand
  • Own and maintain a Career Development Framework aligned to the Babcock Role Framework
  • Manage and maintain balance of Early Careers engineering resource across Cavendish Nuclear and ensure consistency of approach and outcomes
  • Using data from people processes (e.g., PDR, SQEP) understand companywide development themes and work with Heads of Engineering to implement agreed interventions to close gaps
  • Develop and maintain a Subject Matter Expert framework for the business streams to call upon as required

The role is on a permanent, full time basis. We are flexible on location although frequent travel to internal and external sites will be required.

Essential experience of the Chief Engineer:

  • Substantial demonstrable competence covering a range of engineering and / or technical topics and demonstrable people leadership experience.
  • Experience working within a highly regulated sector.

Qualifications for the Chief Engineer:

  • Chartered Engineer and Member of relevant Institute
  • Engineering degree or qualification in relevant engineering discipline or equivalent and appropriate level of experience
