The opportunity:

We are looking for an individual to join our team of cost engineers / modellers. The main objective of this role is to provide independent top level cost estimates, working with both MBDA and the Customer in effective decision making with regards to the development and shaping of future concepts and programmes for the next 20+ years.

In this role you will look at a wide diversity of concepts and products (both existing & new), often looking at new technologies and ideas. You will work closely with a wide variety of stakeholders often at a senior level (Chief Engineers, Executives etc.) and from a breadth of directorates including; Sales, Project, Finance, Portfolio and Technical.

This role sits within the UK Bidding and Contract Evaluation (BCE) team; who provide bids based upon appropriate cost estimates and commercial considerations, in support of domestic and export sales campaigns. Within BCE, there is a specialist cost engineering / modelling function where this vacancy has arisen. We are a small close-knit team who operate independently, but work in a collaborative and supportive environment.

As a Function, we apply cost modelling and estimating to ensure military capability and affordability can be balanced resulting in value for money proposals for our Customers. We help set target costs for long-term projects by building on our historic data and estimating tools and techniques.

You will work closely with the engineering and project teams to understand scope of work and to ensure this is appropriately reflected in the costings. Initial estimates of scope and costs will often be iterated following discussions between the engineering and costing teams until appropriate trade-offs between scope and budget have been made. These activities are essential in supporting dialogue with the UK MoD in helping them set budgets for future initiatives and maintaining affordability once budgets have been set.

What we're looking for from you:

  • Knowledge of cost estimating techniques and methodologies (including parametric) will be an advantage but is not essential
  • Ideally some experience in estimating, manufacturing or engineering
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Able to develop relationships with key partners
  • Ability to make considered judgements when working in an ambiguous environment
