WHAT TO EXPECT

This role sits within Engineering Test Operations EO, specifically the Electrification, Transmission Driveline Team in Whitley. The department delivers test capability which supports design, development, and validation of Powertrain systems from controls development and calibration through to certification and legislative compliance testing. The department operates a range of measurement and test facilities which are used to develop, verify and sign-off component, sub-system, and system-level targets.

The Electrification Test Operations lead engineer is responsible for leading a team of engineers who will deliver Electric machine and Inverter development testing. The role involves working with the EO test engineers, EO management and internal customers to meet the customers testing requirements whilst optimising facility effectiveness. To achieve this the Lead engineer will be responsible for planning test team resource, manage the preparation of test activities, recruiting, develop training, provide coaching and act as a technical knowledge hub for issue resolution as well as chairing programe status meetings reporting the test progress to Powertrain stakeholders. The aim is to develop the operational team to enable the department to become a world class testing partner for Powertrain. It will also involve reaching out to other departments to capture DV requirements, collaborate on issue resolution, explore synergies and develop test methods.

As the ultimate Objective of the department is to produce high quality test data for JLR vehicles the Operations Lead Engineer will be responsible for developing Key Performance Indicators that measure both Operations efficiency (productive + running hours) and contribution of the department test data per vehicle Programme.

As the E-Machine Test Operations Lead Engineer you will be accountable and responsible for the below:

  • Develop training packages to develop the skills within the team to deliver simulation techniques to emulate the vehicle environment within testbed:
  • Deliver CAPL scripts within Vector based toolset to emulate vehicle networks
  • Ensure facility utilisation targets and testing gateways are achieved:
  • De-risking through planning and preparation
  • Ensure continuous workflow by reviewing and preparing upcoming tests via operational meetings o Maximise the use of automation to improve utilisation, repeatability, and quality
  • Take ownership of any issues and work with supporting teams to resolve with urgency
  • Follow existing and update best practices to support the required level of output data quality, by maintaining and updating documentation and look for novel approaches to challenges & communicating lessons learned.
  • Build relationship with internal customer to understand their requirements
  • Apply suitable methods and experience to effectively deliver customer requirements
  • Supply concise and clear information to customers on test status & delays, offer solutions
  • Utilise automation systems to maximise facility utilisation
  • Interpret Design verification methods for prototype units and support the team in translating this into test automation language
  • Track the progress of each testbed versus the initial Design Validation plan (tests completed versus tests planned)
  • Develop automation to meet the above test cases in an automated unmanned way
  • Deploy training packages and instructions for test engineers and operators to operate above mentioned systems
  • Support the wider team by providing management with accurate data to support decision-making processes and develop tools to maximise engineer time and increase efficiency

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Essential: 

  • Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Control or Systems Engineer to a degree level.
  • Expert in data analysis, proficiency with data analysis tools ( at keast one of: Concerto, Excell, Matlab, MDA etc…) ·
  • Experienced in automation systems (at least one of the following: PUMA, CADET, Morphee, LabView, AutomationDesk) · Experience leading and championing structured problem solving techniques
  • Experience in leading operational department ·
  • Experience in management of small team of engineers within fast paced engineering environment ·
  • Competent in MS office
  • Experience with Instrumentation systems specifically used in electric machines or power electronics ·
  • Some experience with coding or event based language (Examples CAPL, C or Mathlab/Simulink)
  • Some experience in hardware or software testing. ·
  • Experience in managing external suppliers

Desirable:

  • Masters degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Control or Systems Engineer to a degree level.  
  • Some experience in automotive testing ·
  • Some experience of physical testing with dynamometers, actuators etc. ·
  • Some experience with electrified vehicle systems such as MHEV, PHEV and BEV ·
  • Some experience of vehicle networks such as CAN-FD, CAN, LIN and FlexRay, and Network analysis tools e.g., Vector CANalyzer or Canoe ·
  • Some experience with Calibration Tools such as ETAS INCA, CANape
