Be part of the QinetiQ journey. We are looking for an Electrical Technician to join our Wind Tunnel Engineering Team to be responsible for installing, maintaining, modifying and upgrading electrical systems and conducting general maintenance.

The QinetiQ 5m Wind Tunnel remains at the forefront of low speed aerodynamic testing and plays an important role in the development of next generation aircraft. The combination of large test section and pressurisation up to three atmospheres make it unique in the UK. The facility incorporates extensive engineering systems including compressors, cooling system, main fan, model handling systems and precision instrumentation, which are controlled by centralised computer based plant control and data acquisition systems.

The Role

As an Electrical Technician you will be part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team supporting the operation, maintenance and upgrade of the facility. The team is hands-on, working daily in either the set-up of bespoke tests, maintenance of equipment, fault-finding and rectification, continuous improvement or wholesale upgrading of systems.

  • Provide basic electrical skills and knowledge working as part of the Wind Tunnel multi-disciplinary technical team
  • Install, maintain, modify and upgrade electrical systems under the direction of more senior members of the team when required
  • Fault finding on basic electrical systems
  • Conduct general electrical systems maintenance in accordance with the facility PPM tool
  • Support customer trials (changing standard working hours to shifts when needed)

Skills and experience of the Electrical Technician

  • Essential:
    • Electrical (or closely related) apprenticeship;
    • Relevant technical / vocational qualifications attained during apprenticeship Knowledge of health and safety processes;
    • Demonstrable practical experience installing and maintaining electrical systems;
    • Ability to troubleshoot basic electrical faults / issues and repair / rectify them;
    • Ability to work at heights and within confined spaces;
    • Awareness of statutory regulations;
    • IET wiring regulations certification, 18th edition is preferable but would train if necessary.
  • Desirable:
    • Awareness of safe systems of work;
    • Basic knowledge of industrial electrical systems;
    • Knowledge of rotating machines and associated drive systems;
    • Awareness of control systems e.g. PLCs, instrumentation electrical system interfaces;
    • Ability to read and understand electrical drawings.

Qualifications for the Electrical Technician

This role would suit someone who has recently completed a recognised apprenticeship with relevant vocational qualifications who is eager to learn new skills and gain knowledge in the wide variety of systems and sub-systems that underpin facility operation e.g. rotating machines, variable speed drives, PLCs, plant control and instrumentation.
