About the job

What You’ll Do

This role sits within Engineering Test Operations (EO) specifically the Electrification, Transmission, Driveline and Power Electronics test team. The department delivers test capability which supports design, development and validation of Powertrain systems from controls development and calibration through to certification and legislative compliance testing. The department operates a range of test facilities and measurement devices which are used to verify and sign-off component, sub-system and system level targets.

You will be part of an organisation tasked with understanding and adapting electrified vehicle propulsion systems to fulfil a suite of tests as defined by the vehicle/unit programme.  Elements of the intended powertrain system will be selected as the ‘System Under Test’ (SuT), these could include elements of the battery, electric drive and power electronics units. These will need to be combined with other production/prototype parts and CAE to produce a system design that will interface with the test facility and deliver quality data in a simulated vehicle environment.

Key Accountabilites and Responsibilities

  • Liaise with customer to understand their test requirements.
  • Decompose these to determine test system requirements.
  • Be able to understand the electrical, physical and mechanical interactions and interfaces within the test environment in order to:
    • Specify test environment
    • Design system under test schematics
    • Design robust network topologies and physical layers
    • Design both high and low voltage electrical distribution systems
    • Specify simulation requirements
    • Specify data acquisition requirements
    • Guide CAD engineers to deliver mechanical designs
  • Work with Centres of Competence across the Business (for example Electrical / Chassis / Powertrain) to understand ECU and SW Interactions.
  • Act as champion for process documentation and support continuous improvement to increase test efficiency and product quality. Record processes and retain data appropriately to ensure a positive outcome for any audit, e.g. TS16949, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001.
  • Produce and maintain accurate delivery plans and keep key stakeholders informed.
  • Undertake any other work as directed by their line manager in connection with their job as may be requested.
  • Support operations teams with in-cell support and “hands on” debug and commissioning.
  • Research, explore and implement new test techniques and test products.
  • Any other tasks as instructed by line manager in relation to work activities

What You’ll Need

Essential:

  • Automotive, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Control or Systems Engineering (or a related subject) to degree level.
  • Ability to design mechanical fixtures to adapt prototype components to the rig environment
  • Ability to open Vehicle and component CAD models and derive requirements for interfaces
  • Ability to project and design cooling circuits taking into account heat rejection, component requirements
  • Ability to effectively manage projects
  • Knowledge of electrified vehicle powertrain systems and power electronics components.

Computer literate, including Microsoft Office competency to produce plans, presentations, graphs, and process and Single Point Lesson (SPL) documents.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of wiring design rules and techniques.
  • Knowledge of automotive networks, CAN, Flexray, LIN & Automotive Ethernet.
  • Understanding of virtual environment (Hardware in the Loop) & simulation concepts.
  • Master’s degree in a related subject
  • Technical expertise and experience of test facility and system under test preparation
  • Six Sigma, Black Belt and Green Belt Training and certification.
  • Experience with TS16949 or ISO9001 standards and requirements.
  • Project management experience.
  • Knowledge of autonomous vehicle control systems and associated network.
  • Knowledge of CAPITAL wiring design tool.
  • Knowledge of Vector and dSPACE products toolchain.
  • Programming knowledge – Matlab/C/CAPL/Python/Java or similar.
