What to Expect

An opportunity to be an active member of the JLR Base Engines “Quality Engineering” team working on the latest generation of hybridised engines which are the stepping stone to JLR’s electrified future. This is an excellent opportunity to experience wide range of powertrain components focusing on problem solving for various design, process or quality related issues.

 

Engine Quality Problem Solving is responsible for improving the quality experience of our customers by managing and resolving key quality projects focusing on customer complaints by making use of the JLR IQM 8D management system. The role demands strong technical problem solving skills as well as engineering design and development knowledge for hybridised base engine components with good understanding of change management process to address key customer quality projects. The Engine Quality Problem Solving Engineer will ensure design integrity and robustness during problem resolution of the key projects and also ensure that our body of knowledge is enhanced with lessons learned to ensure necessary prevent reoccurrence actions are in place.

 

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • To manage IQM projects that have a defined problem statement into the root cause, corrective action, implementation and prevent recurrence steps. 

  • To lead and coordinate cross functional team including purchasing, design, validation, STA, supplier and manufacturing to ensure robust progression of the quality and warranty projects. 

  • To lead the root cause investigation activities using tools such as Is / Is Not, 5 Why, Scope Analysis, statistical quality data analysis and physical engine or vehicle level validation tests. 

  • To lead the design direction and decision making on behalf of Product Development for engine systems to address outstanding design or quality related customer complaints. 

  • To demonstrate precision, control and integrity in all problem solving steps and to make all decisions based on evidence based engineering principles using reliable data only. 

  • To manage, coordinate and perform validation plans at the root cause and corrective action steps of your project. 

  • To communicate the status and progression of your quality project with clear and concise message to the senior management team. 

  • To ensure that necessary interim, corrective and prevent recurrence actions are taken not only to address the issue in current production but also in the field by ensuring that the best solution (information, procedure, part etc) is available for JLR service team. 

  • To perform commercial business case assessment to conclude feasibility of design / process change decision compared to warranty cost prediction of a particular failure mode.

  • Passion to address customer complaints in the quickest possible way to improve quality experience of our customers.

 

What you’ll need

Essential:

  • Technical engineering background with knowledge of Engines Engineering.

  • Understanding of design and validation principles on engine systems and components.

  • Ability to apply problem solving skills such as 8D, 6 Sigma, data analysis, validation tests within an engine engineering environment.

  • Good understanding of engineering statistics in defining the scope of the customer problem. Strong Excel skills including data manipulation, analysis charting and pivot tables.

  • Ability to communicate and report project delivery status up to Chief Engineer. Logical thinker and clear communicator. Able to explain complex issues in a simple clear manner.

  • Ability to act in an entrepreneurial environment and be resourceful and resilient to the changing demands of the business with agile mindset.

  • Passion in problem solving in order to deliver the optimum solution to JLR customers at the quickest possible timeframe.

 

Desirable:

  • Degree in mechanical, electro-mechanical or automotive engineering preferred

  • Experience of managing 8D and 6Sigma projects for key technical problems in a tight timeframe and agile framework.

  • Experience in data logging and analysis tools

  • Understanding internal combustion engine function and failure modes
