Job Description

Who are we looking for?

This is an excellent opportunity to lead an engineering team, in the Integrated Engineering Division, being involved in a number of programmes of work. This role gives you the opportunity to lead a team to implement best practice engineering across all programmes of work and lead in creating innovative solutions to meet challenging requirements.

Providing a technical leadership service, you will seek to work cooperatively with a number of stakeholders and your team to achieve the best possible result with a ‘can do’ approach. You will have an interest in seeking creative ways to change, solve problems and push scientific and technical boundaries. You will have previous experience of leading project teams and will possess good working knowledge in at least one of the following areas:

- Engineering design.
- Project engineering.
- Process engineering.

What will you be responsible for?

The role holder manages a team within the Product Engineering Unit. They will manage the work and development of the employees in the section. The role holder also provides leadership for the technical execution of projects.

- Lead an Engineering Section providing specialist technical knowledge and direction, serving as a point of authority and advise on technical solutions.
- Manage the work and development of employees in the team.
- Providing leadership for the technical execution of projects.
- Effectively managing project/operational activities of a multi-disciplinary project team of multiple engineers, designers and analysts.
- Act as a Technical Reference for UKAEA in areas of knowledge.
- Keeping abreast of developments, innovation and best practice in relevant engineering disciplines, and make recommendations for promulgation within the Unit.
- Actively promote the Section’s skills and expertise, within the unit and beyond.
- Lead the development of processes for best practice in engineering for implementation by the team on projects.
 
Qualifications

Essential skills, experience and competence required

- A relevant engineering degree or equivalent.
- Attained or actively working towards Chartered status with a suitable professional institution.
- Good communication and technical writing skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Experience in engineering design and substantiation, project engineering or process engineering.

Desirable skills, experience and competence

- Experience with working to design standards and design codes.
- Experience in development of staff competencies.
- Experience with fusion-relevant environmental factors such as radiation, vacuum and transient magnetic fields.
- Ability to perform exploratory design calculations using first principles.
